Literature Review – Comparing CBT and EMDR for PTSD in U.S. Veterans

A literature review is important when addressing a research question because it enables a researcher to find research studies that offer information that can be used to support the arguments made to answer the research question. In the research addressing the question, In U.S. veterans diagnosed with PTSD, how does CBT compare to EMDR in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression over 6 months? various databases were used to find articles with information that can be used to answer the question. The two databases were PubMed and ScienceDirect. The PubMed database was selected because it contains many citations for biomedical literature from life science journals and online books. The ScienceDirect database, on the other hand, was selected because it is the world’s leading source of medical and scientific research articles. The keywords used to search for articles in the two databases were Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, PTSD, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and EMDR. These keywords were selected because they represent the scientific interventions mentioned in the research question, thus providing a comprehensive search that captures relevant studies.

Various considerations were also made to determine the studies to be included in the literature review. For example, the inclusion criteria focused on intervention and study design. According to Patino & Ferreira (2018), using exclusion and inclusion criteria is standard practice in research because it helps the researcher define the key features of the target population that will be used to address the research question. For example, in the current research, the selected articles had to report on a completed research study that includes individuals with PTSD, tests the use of CBT and EMDR in the treatment of PTSD, and examine the impact of the use of CBT and EMDR on the symptoms of depression and anxiety. The selected articles also included only research studies, including randomized control trials. Zabor et al. (2020) argue that randomized controlled trials are essential in gathering evidence to establish causal associations in clinical research. Therefore, using research studies, including randomized controlled trials, would help in establishing the causal relationship between CBT and EMDR and reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety.
