Literary Modernism

Literary Modernism

Literature continuously changes with the times. In the 1900s, modernism was applied in the literature. Modernism was a movement that began after World War 1, in which people changed their view of life and other aspects, including literature and art, from what was previously accepted (“What Is Modernism?”). Literary modernism was characterized by rebelling against traditional writing methodologies. Subsequently, the works of literal modernist writers were not clear cut as they deviated from the traditional ways of writing, as illustrated in the poem “The Waste Land” by Eliot, T. S. The poem “The Wasteland” by Eliot T.S. differs from traditional writing. From the poem’s opening, Eliot establishes literary modernism by rebelling against traditional writing. Traditionally, spring is considered a favourable time following the end of winter; however, Eliot T.S approaches spring differently by considering April, a month in spring, as cruel by stating,” April is the cruelest month, breeding” (1). This statement establishes modernism by deviating from what was traditionally acceptable.

Accordingly, this modernist context was important to the modernist movement. Following the end of the First World War, much damage was left in society, both socially and economically. Consequently, people chose to deviate from the traditional view, thus modernism, as Eliot T.S illustrated. This literary modernism established the state of society and the people at the time, which would not be as it was in the past but different following the drastic changes resulting from the World War. Additionally, symbolism is one style utilized in the poem to indicate modernism further.

In conclusion, the changes in American literature have occurred over a period of time. In most cases, a movement results during a given period and affects many aspects of society, including art, music, and literature. The modernism movement affected aspects such as literature influencing people’s ideologies. Consequently, modernist writers such as T.S. Eliot became known to the world.
