Limiting Teen Use of Drugs

Limiting Teen Use of Drugs

Did you know that teenage drug use affects growth and development and is a causal factor for many health issues in adulthood? According to the CDC, drug abuse in adolescents contributes to the development of adult illnesses such as cardiovascular disorders and mental health illnesses. Additionally, teenage drug use has been implicated in risky behaviors that equally have detrimental impacts on health, such as dangerous driving and unprotected sex. This highlights the need to limit drug use among teens.

Several strategies have been utilized in this regard. Parental engagement remains a superior intervention to limit teenage drug use. Parents play a critical role in preventing and minimizing drug use among their adolescent children. They do so by influencing who their children hang out with, informing their children about the harmful effects of drug use, and fostering a healthy relationship with them to earn their trust. This will ensure that their children abide by their instructions and messaging on drug use. Central to parenting is creating an unwavering bond between the child and the parent (O’Connor et al., 2020). This will enable the parent to influence the child’s decision-making processes and allow them to identify peculiar behaviors in the child that are suggestive of drug use. Another intervention to limit drug use among teens is to optimize societal structures that aim at limiting teen exposure to substances of abuse. This includes restricting the sale of drugs to teenagers, educating adolescents on the harmful impact of drug abuse, and supporting the implementation of the available interventions against drug use. Together, we can limit drug use among teenagers.
