Licensure and Certification Requirements-Teacher

Licensure and Certification Requirements-Teacher

Part One

To be certified as a teacher in a particular state, many steps must be completed. In Mississippi, the first requirement is completing the prerequisite coursework. The potential instructor must complete a four-year degree from a credited university or college. In addition, one is also required to complete a teacher education program that equips teachers with knowledge and skills essential in the classroom. The second step is to prepare for the required tests, whereby the instructor must pass two assessments known as Praxis 1 and Praxis 2 (AllEducationSchools.com, 2023). Praxis 1 tests a potential teacher’s basic skills involving reading, writing, and solving mathematical problems. Praxis 2 test measures one’s knowledge of the specific areas one wishes to teach.

The third step is to apply for reciprocity, a process by which a potential teacher can acquire a teaching certificate in one state based on their teaching certificate in another. The fourth and final step is to apply for certification, whereby potential instructors submit an application, fee, and transcripts. The education department then reviews the application, and the potential instructor will be informed of their certification status. If one has met all the certification requirements, one can apply for teaching posts in their state. The average salary for a certified teacher is $50,000 per year. Nevertheless, salaries differ depending on their grade level and teaching experience period.

Part Two

I have chosen to research the teacher education program at Mississippi State University, and the link to their Teacher Education Program Curriculum is https://www.msstate.edu/academics/college-of-education (ITS Web Development Team, 2019). The University has a curriculum, instruction, and special education department that offers CAEP-accredited undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs in elementary and secondary education, curriculum, and instruction. Elementary education is designed to prepare learners to become effective elementary instructors. The program also contains a practicum component whereby learners gain experience in real classroom setups. The College of Education at Mississippi State University has been accredited at the national, regional, and state levels. On the national level, it was accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), now the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
