Dear Senator Joyce West,

Hope you are doing well. I am Kendra West, a nursing student. I’d like to share my concerns about the high cost of healthcare in the state and the country with you.

The high cost of healthcare is a traditional problem in the U.S. While the problem cuts across all American societies, low socioeconomic communities are disproportionately affected by this issue (Özdemir & Özdemir, 2019). The high administrative cost of healthcare makes it impossible for them to access care services. Federal and state politics have also been implicated in debates on the high cost of healthcare. This has been evident in ambivalent approaches to tackling this issue, seen in the bipartisan approach to Medicaid expansion witnessed recently. Political commitment to lowering the cost of healthcare can effectively ensure a reduction in healthcare costs. The high cost of healthcare is disruptive to the ethical obligation of justice that requires equal and fair treatment by all communities. It makes it hard for disadvantaged communities to be served judiciously.

The high cost of healthcare has great implications for nursing practice. As the administrative cost of healthcare increases, nurses may be left with limited, cost-effective healthcare choices to offer to their patients (Shrank et al., 2021). While this may be effective, it may sometimes come at the expense of quality. In the pursuit of quality care, nurses cannot detach the high-quality services they provide from the costs and savings involved.

For these reasons, I am addressing the high cost of healthcare. I hereby request that you use your functional capacity to push for policy reforms that will reduce healthcare costs. By decrying its effects on communities and lobbying with other senators, reforms can be made at both federal and state levels to decrease healthcare costs.
