Lesson Summary:This lesson will take Grade 5 students through the multiplication of figures by 10. In 45 minutes, the students will have an opportunity to understand the impact of Power 10 on other numbers. |

Classroom and student factors:The class has 30 students. 4 of them are learning English as a second language (White and Hispanic). Most are within the 5th grade level. 2 are one year above the 5th grade level, while one is two years below. 6 students are either one or two years below the grade level in terms of mathematical performance. |

III. RATIONALE |

RATIONALEThe main instructions that will be used to implement the lesson plan include repetition, Math games, and pair/group work. Repetition involves reviewing different concepts that build onto the current topic. The teacher can use this technique to help students, especially those learning English as a second language, internalize the critical concepts. Going over the formulas learned in past lessons and multiplication strategies that lead to the attainment of the right product allows even the slow learners to understand the basics. It is important that students master the core concepts of the topic before they can gradually move into advanced topics. The technique will also be used during elaboration and evaluation to ensure that the lesson’s objectives are fulfilled. Math games are ideal for making this lesson interesting and captivating for all students. Besides encouraging active participation in the fun activity, it will also enable the students to concentrate through the 45 minutes. Using games will also make it easy for students to remember the learned concepts. In this case, computer games will be ideal due to the large size of the class (Resilient Educator, 2020). Group and pair work is important in ensuring students learn from each other through collaboration. The instructor will give tasks to pairs and groups of students. Each group and pair will present their solutions by taking the rest of the class through the calculation process. Such an approach will encourage competitiveness and critical thinking as students try to solve mathematical problems. In addition, it also encourages the active participation of all students (Solari, Denton, & Haring, 2017). The process of sharing knowledge enhances understanding of the content. |
