Learning Style Assessment
The student scored 7 in active versus reflective learning. This means that the student has a moderate preference for active learning or reflective learning and may learn less easily in a situation that does not address their preference. On sensing or intuitive learning, the student scored 5, meaning that they may either prefer intuitive or sensing learning and if an environment does not provide this, they may learn with difficulty. The score of 3 on visual versus verbal learning means that the student is fairly well balanced on both visual and verbal learning and may only show a mild preference for either visual or verbal learning. Subsequently, the score of 5 in sequential versus global learning portrays that the student has a moderate preference for one or the other, and they may not learn quickly where this is not provided.
Currently, I learn best by reading alone and then memorizing and thinking about what I have learned. To modify the study techniques to fit my learning style, now that I know my learning style, I would reflect and, at the same time, act on those reflections by engaging in activities that would boost my understanding. Felder & Soloman (2022) write that sitting in lectures and not doing any physical thing aside from taking notes is difficult for reflective and active learners and particularly harder for active learners. Therefore, it would be helpful to engage in group discussions to internalize aside from reflecting on the notes alone. Felder & Soloman (2022) find that a balance of both active and reflective learning is desirable because working with other people will help understand what would be asked next in a test. This enables students to retain information better. After a class lecture, I will also take short notes in my own words to internalize what is taught more. I would further try to engage my friends and find out their understanding of the lecture as well as refer to other texts and references in the library.
