Learning Organization Element The extent to which the company epitomizes this element Provide a sentence justifying your determination
High Medium Low
Inspiring and motivating people with a mission or purpose x I believe the Kroger Company highly epitomizes the inspiration and motivation of people with a mission or purpose. This is because it aligns its operations to meet customer needs and demands and uses the mission statement to show customers how it offers products and services that can satisfy them. The company also uses its mission statement to motivate employees based on the specific goals that they must meet to improve the company’s effectiveness in distributing products and services. The mission statement is also based on the company’s major strengths and abilities. It highlights the strategic tactics, processes, and systems that should be used to achieve the organization’s goals.
Developing leaders x I believe Kroger Company highly exemplifies leadership development because it has developed a leadership development program for executive leaders. Kroger Company’s leadership program equips executive leaders with knowledge and skills in financial valuation, conflict resolution, data analysis, problem-solving, and negotiation (Bellarmine University, 2022). Leaders also undergo in-store training to develop merchandising and managerial skills to meet the company’s objectives.
Empowering employees x I believe Kroger Company highly epitomizes employee empowerment because it has established an employee benefit program with different plans. According to Duberstein (2018), Kroger Company’s employee benefits programs include increased wages, an educational assistance program to support employees’ education, employee discounts on the company’s brands, and an increase in the internal fund employees are offered for hardships. Employees are also actively engaged in the company’s sustainability plans. For example, the company encourages employees to work with the community to implement sustainability initiatives.
Accumulating and sharing internal knowledge x I believe Kroger Company highly epitomizes the accumulation and sharing of internal knowledge because it has developed a platform where videos and stories that keep employees informed are shared. The company has also developed culture councils where employees meet to exchange information on how problems within the company can be resolved and facilitate direct communication between top executives and employees.
Gathering and integrating external information x I believe the gathering and integration of external information aspect in Kroger Company is medium because the company relies on customer insights to determine development areas. The company also relies on third parties, such as colleges and universities, to get important insights on improvement areas, thus slowing down the integration of external information in its operations because the information needs to be assessed to determine its validity. Research and development is also limited by using the company’s innovation lab, which gathers external information and implements it to improve operations within the company and ensure that products and services meet customers’ needs and preferences.
Challenging the status quo and enabling creativity x I believe the aspect of the challenging status quo and enabling creativity is medium because decisions are made by top executives, thus making it hard for employees to try out innovative ideas without the authorization of top executives. Innovative ideas are also reviewed in the company’s innovation lab, thus limiting employees’ ability to try new ideas.

Recommendation

The competition in the retail industry is rapidly increasing due to the entry of large and small retail companies in different retail markets. Therefore, Kroger Company’s leaders should enhance the challenging status quo and enable creativity to create a competitive advantage. I would recommend giving employees autonomy to try new ideas and ensuring they have the resources needed. According to Nasution et al. (2021), employee autonomy facilitates innovation by giving employees the authority to apply new ideas to meet the organization’s objectives. Enhancing innovation could help the company create more value by meeting customers’ needs and preferences. Innovation can also improve the quality of products and services, thus increasing value. Autonomy will also create job satisfaction, thus increasing employee commitment and company value due to improved productivity.
