Inspiring and motivating people with a mission or purpose x Google focuses on creating good experiences for its employees. Google’s motivation model is starkly different from traditional models. Whereas traditional models focus on results, Google focuses on motivating those who deliver those results (Thomas & Karodia, 2014). The model aligns with the company’s philosophy; “to create the happiest, most productive workplace in the world.”
Developing leaders x Global companies understand that developing effective global leaders is key to their success. As a result, Google sends their best minds to work in overseas locations. Before the company begins operations in a foreign subsidiary, potential leaders are sent to familiarize themselves with local business regulations and partnership frameworks.
Empowering employees x Google offers its employees attractive perks and benefits to make them consistently happy. Some benefits include employee legal fee reimbursement, 100% paid extended maternity leave, and financial support for adopting families (Thomas & Karodia, 2014). Employees also benefit from on-site facilities such as well-equipped restaurants with free meals and gym facilities. These facilities are designed to make the employee happy.
Accumulating and sharing internal knowledge X Employees at Google have a considerable voice. To ensure employees are heard, the company hosts employees’ forums every Friday where the most asked 20 questions are examined. Employees may also use other communication channels to express their ideas or discontentment, including Google+ conversations or direct emails to leaders. The company also uses surveys to collect viewpoints on how major organizational problems may be solved.
Gathering and integrating external information x The company leverages its platform and big data to learn emerging market trends and consumer behavior (Hewage et al., 2018). To that end, Google uses anticipatory and predictive marketing while acting on consumer data. The company is one of the largest advertisers on Google platforms. For instance, when the company launched Chromecast, they conducted a survey to understand which television show was the most loved. Consequently, the most popular shows were hosted.
Challenging the status quo and enabling creativity x Google has done away with traditional work models and embraced creative ways of doing things. For instance, instead of being trained by top managers, employees can deliver their projects uniquely. Besides, there is a relaxed work environment that spurs creativity. For instance, employees may report working in their pajamas or even with their dogs.
The company has an opportunity to bolster internal information sharing. Apart from the weekly meetings and emails to leaders, there is a need to embrace other creative ways of information sharing. For instance, eliminating the element of judgment by enabling anonymous information sharing will come in handy.
