Learning Environments
There are different ways of assisting children in learning a second language within a learning setting. One way is by teaching phrases and words. This way, learners will be encouraged to use the phrases and words they learn in their daily conversation, eventually helping them learn a second language. Pull-out is another helpful program. This program is designed to ensure learners learn a second language in a mainstream classroom and then move them to special English language classes for some time (Espinosa, 2018). The activities within this strategy are learning numbers, colors, and shapes in unfamiliar languages to support learners in learning a second language. Thirdly, stickers or charts to write the words in picture form at the learner’s eye level and ensure they can easily access them all the time and practice them.

Various families with children learning a second language do not know how to support their children. However, within a learning environment, such kids can be supported. First, teachers can do this by inviting families to be part of the second language learning process by giving children resources they can utilize at home with their parent’s help, such as songs, videos, games, and flashcards (Booton, Hodgkiss & Murphy, 2021). Secondly, teachers can organize cultural events involving learners and families to help them connect to the second language.
Espinosa (2018) affirms that if children gain enough experience and exposure to two languages, they can attain full capability in both dialects. One important approach for helping learners learn a second language is the One-person One Language approach (OPOL) (Schott, Tamayo & Byers-Heinlein, 2022). Under this approach, every parent should regularly speak only one of the two languages to the kids. For example, fathers can speak Spanish while mothers speak English to the kids. A resource that can help learners while working together with OPOL is Muzzy. It is a BBC response to language learning for all ages, which uses the natural immersion technique to imitate how children learn the first language (“MUZZY BBC Language Learning for Children”, n.d.).
The question that still lingers in my mind about a second language is, does learning a second language exclusively promote inclusion and diversity?
