Learning Disabilities at Michigan House Senior Living

Learning Disabilities at Michigan House Senior Living

Learning disabilities are part of a person and organization’s learning process. The two learning disabilities I have experienced in my workplace are the “I Am My Position” and the “The Parable of the Boiled Frog” learning disabilities. The “I Am My Position” disability includes only describing what a person does at their workplace instead of the organization’s purpose (Senge, 2006). Conversely, the “The Parable of the Boiled Frog” learning disability includes not paying attention to the gradual changes that quickly impact the organization’s ability to meet its goals (Senge, 2006). The “I Am My Position” learning disability is manifested in Michigan House Senior Living through employee behavior. For example, the nurses and nurse assistants in the organization only focus on the tasks in their job description and cannot assist caregivers in tasks such as changing and bathing the patients because they have a small sense of responsibility for how the organization performs when all the departments work together. The “The Parable of the Boiled Frog” is manifested in the organization by the leaders’ approach to change management. For example, the leaders in the organization do not consider how the exchange of false information about a change could impact the successful implementation of a change, and they only respond when they realize that too much negative and false information has been shared among employees based on the reasons for resistance to the change.

The main approach I would take as a leader in the organization to address the “I Am My Position” job is creating cross-functional teams and assigning them tasks requiring all employees’ input from different functional areas. According to Kalabina & Belyak (2022), cross-functional teams are formed by at least one employee from a different functional area in an organization to achieve a shared goal. I believe the use of cross-functional teams and assigning tasks that require the input of all employees from different functional areas will fix the problems relating to the “I Am My Position” learning disability by promoting the exchange of information and ideas among employees from various departments and prompting them to support one another to meet the organization’s goals.

I would fix the problems relating to “The Parable of the Boiled Frog” learning disability by regularly collecting employee feedback to determine the small issues that could impact the organization significantly if not addressed within the shortest time, especially during the change implementation process. Some of the issues that can be identified through employee feedback in the change implementation process are communication issues. Notably, employee feedback is vital in measuring organizational communication effectiveness (Nikolić et al., 2020). Therefore, I believe that employee feedback can prevent miscommunication and the spread of false information at Michigan House Senior Living, thus fixing the problems linked to “The Parable of the Boiled Frog” learning disability in the organization.
