Three Ways a DNP-Prepared Nurse Can Provide Leadership to Optimize Reimbursement from Insurers

1. Implementation of Evidence-Based Practices

As the head of staff, a DNP-prepared nurse can initiate implementing evidence-based practices in a healthcare entity for better patient outcomes. In this manner, the nurse will be able to discourage hospital-acquired conditions and readmissions that are adverse to reimbursement under value-based purchasing arrangements (Abu-Baker et al., 2021).

2. Enhancing Care Coordination

By improving coordination of care across different departments and care settings, a DNP-prepared nurse can help ensure that patients receive timely and appropriate care. This can reduce unnecessary tests and procedures, prevent duplicative services, and enhance patient satisfaction (Karam et al., 2021). Effective care coordination leads to better compliance with insurer requirements and improved reimbursement rates.

3. Data Analysis and Quality Improvement

A DNP-prepared nurse can apply a high level of expertise in assessing trends within a healthcare entity for further enhancements. Since improvement activities focus on discrete measures linked to reimbursement, including readmissions or patient satisfaction, the nurse has a lever for affecting organizational performance (Samardzic et al., 2020). This is through health informatics and analytics, which enable the identification of performance and the making of the right decisions.

New Insight or Perspective from the IHI ACA Video

After reviewing the IHI ACA video, one new insight gained is the critical role of preventive care in reducing overall healthcare costs and improving population health. In the video, the focus is on explaining that the ACA really emphasizes preventive services, and many preventive measures are to be covered without the application of cost (Institute for Healthcare Improvement – IHI, 2017). The shift to prevention can also minimize the long-term possibilities of a range of chronic diseases and decrease overall expenditures by avoiding the use of expensive emergency services.

Impact on Practice

This perspective on the importance of preventive care will impact my practice by reinforcing the need to prioritize and advocate for preventive measures within my patient population. I will, therefore, ensure that as a DNP-prepared nurse, I educate patients on the importance of adopting a preventive care plan that includes vaccinations, screening, and avoiding habits such as smoking, excessive drinking, and poor diets (Backhouse & Ogunlayi, 2020). Additionally, I will work to implement and support programs within my healthcare organization that promote preventive health services, ensuring that these programs are accessible and utilized effectively.
