The Primary Difference between a Leader and a Manager
According to Schroeder (2013), leadership includes determining direction, influencing a group, and directing the group towards a specific mission or goal, while management includes implementing task-oriented duties that support, facilitate, and direct efficient and timely maintenance of operations. Therefore, the primary difference between a leader and a manager is that a leader focuses on inspiring and motivating followers to create a passion for reaching long-term goals, while a manager focuses on formal controlling and directing employees, structures, resources, and systems to achieve short-term goals, establish measures to improve efficiency and avoid risks.
Areas of Development One Needs to Pursue to Be an Effective HR Leader
Becoming an effective leader in HR requires developing skills that improve relations with others. One of the areas of development that should be pursued is decision-making skills. Leaders need to decide what should be done and how problems should be addressed. In the HR department, a leader may constantly make decisions relating to hiring, employee training, development, and motivation. Therefore, decision-making skills are important to make the right decisions. The second area is communication skills. Leaders need to communicate the vision to followers clearly. In HR, leaders need communication skills to share professional needs with employees to ensure that their actions achieve the organization’s long-term goals. According to Kumaran (2012), communication skills are important in leadership because clear and proper communication inspires followers to achieve long-term goals. Leaders also need to develop emotional intelligence, which, according to Brackett & Elbertson (2019), is the capacity to comprehend and manage emotions and recognize other people’s feelings. Leaders require emotional intelligence to promote a happier and healthier work environment by ensuring that every employee’s emotions are considered when implementing important decisions relating to their work. Emotional intelligence is vital in HR because it is applied to solving employees’ problems, thus achieving employee satisfaction, which translates to improved employee productivity.
