Leadership Strengths and Weaknesses

I believe that being sensitive and empathetic is one of my greatest strengths. These traits mean that I can show tolerance and am sympathetic and tactful, in addition to understanding others and identifying with them (Northouse, 2018). One example of when I illustrated these strengths was a couple of years ago when I was appointed as a leader in a group that turned out to have very strong-minded people who were not willing to work together or compromise; all wanted the project to be based on their ideas. With my team not agreeing or working together, it meant that we were going to fail. Further, it was challenging for me to get all five members to come together and talk. This required my tolerance and patience because they were all stubborn. I was also required to be tactful in finding ways to settle disputes and try to understand and identify with everyone so that I could represent them well as their team leader. Eventually, we all came together and completed the project, and we even won second place in the competition.

On the other hand, I believe that not being outgoing is one of my biggest weaknesses. By outgoing, I mean that I am unable to talk freely with people in casual settings unless I have known them for some time. Unless I am in a formal setting where the conversation is pretty much formal, like in a meeting, I have never been comfortable carrying on conversations with people I barely know, and sometimes, if not most of the time, it tends to get awkward. One example where my behavior illustrated this weakness was when I was invited to a party where I only knew a few people. After barely an hour of being there, I could feel my social battery, as described by Awdi (2022), draining, and I ended up leaving soon after. I feel this is a weakness because it keeps me from meeting people who could later prove to be good friends or acquaintances.
