Leadership Skills and Style
Authentic leadership is a crucial aspect of any work environment, particularly in the healthcare industry, where it can significantly impact the quality of care provided to patients. Self-awareness is a critical component of authentic leadership, enabling leaders to act with integrity and empathy. In this article, I will discuss what I have discovered about my leadership and professional relationship management skills and style. Finally, I will explore how healthcare leaders can engage with the cultures present in the work environment to become more effective in their roles.
What I Discovered About My Leadership Skills and Style
One of my most significant discoveries is that my leadership style is primarily collaborative and inclusive. I value input from team members and strive to create a safe space for everyone to share their ideas. I am approachable and empathetic, and I try to connect with individuals on a personal level. I also realized that I could be hesitant to make difficult decisions and therefore need to be more assertive when necessary. This hesitation can sometimes lead to delays in decision-making and can impact the team’s overall effectiveness. Moving forward, I aim to improve my ability to make timely and confident decisions that are in the best interest of the team and the organization.
Another area where I discovered room for improvement is conflict resolution. I avoid conflict, particularly when there are differing opinions or perspectives. This can sometimes result in unresolved issues that impact team dynamics and productivity. I aim to improve my conflict resolution skills by actively seeking out differing opinions and perspectives, listening actively, and making decisions in the best interest of the team and the organization.
Overall, I excel in creating an inclusive and empathetic work environment and am approachable and collaborative. However, I need to be more assertive in decision-making and improve my conflict-resolution skills. By prioritizing these areas for improvement, I can become a more effective leader and positively impact my team and the organization.
What I Have Learnt About Professional Relationship Management Skills and Style
One of my most significant discoveries is that I excel at building trust and rapport with team members. I am approachable and empathetic, and I try to connect with individuals on a personal level. This helps me establish strong relationships with team members, which can lead to increased trust, communication, and collaboration.
Another area I excel is delegating tasks and responsibilities effectively. I understand the strengths and weaknesses of my team members and assign tasks accordingly, ensuring that each person is challenged but not overwhelmed. I also provide clear instructions and deadlines and check in regularly to offer support and guidance as needed. By delegating tasks effectively, I can maximize productivity and ensure everyone works towards a common goal. Additionally, this allows team members to develop new skills and gain confidence in their abilities, which ultimately benefits the team as a whole. Another area where I discovered room for improvement is communication. While I am approachable and empathetic, I struggle to articulate my thoughts and ideas clearly. This can lead to misunderstandings and confusion, which can impact team productivity. Improving communication skills by actively seeking feedback from team members, practicing active listening, and making an effort can help articulate thoughts and ideas clearly and concisely (Cunningham, 2019).
Furthermore, I learned that I tend to be task-oriented, sometimes leading me to overlook the importance of building personal relationships with team members. I aim to improve my relationship management skills by balancing my focus on tasks and building personal connections with team members. This will help me build stronger relationships, improve team dynamics, and enhance collaboration and productivity. However, I need to improve my conflict resolution and relationship management skills. By prioritizing these areas for improvement, I can become a more effective leader and positively impact my team and the organization.
Engaging With the Cultures Present in the Work Environment to Become More Effective In My Role
As a leader in healthcare, engaging with the various cultures present in the work environment is crucial to providing effective patient care. One way to engage with different cultures is by attending cultural competency training to learn about different cultures’ beliefs, values, and customs. This training can help healthcare leaders understand their patient’s unique needs and perspectives, which can improve patient care and outcomes. In addition to attending cultural competency training, healthcare leaders can build diverse teams that reflect the patient population they serve. Diverse teams can provide different perspectives and experiences, leading to better patient care and outcomes.
Another way that healthcare leaders like me can engage with different cultures is by creating inclusive work environments where employees feel valued and respected, regardless of their cultural background. Leaders can improve team dynamics, productivity, and patient care by creating an inclusive work environment (Clemens & Johansen, 2021). Leaders can also partner with community organizations that serve diverse populations to help them understand the unique needs of the communities they serve. This can also help leaders build trust and rapport with patients, improving patient care and outcomes. Lastly, effective communication is key when engaging with different cultures. Leaders can communicate effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds by using interpreters, providing written materials in multiple languages, and using culturally appropriate communication techniques.
Conclusion
In conclusion, authentic leadership is critical in the healthcare industry, and self-awareness is crucial to this leadership style. Through self-reflection, healthcare leaders can identify their strengths and areas for improvement, which can help them become more effective in their roles. Effective healthcare leadership requires engagement with diverse cultures in the work environment to provide quality patient care. Healthcare leaders can engage with different cultures through cultural competency training, creating inclusive work environments, building diverse teams, partnering with community organizations, and using culturally appropriate communication techniques. By prioritizing these areas for improvement, healthcare leaders can become more effective, positively impact their teams and organizations, and ultimately provide better patient care and outcomes.
