What have I accomplished as a leader?

Leadership is a process that includes influencing others to accomplish a specific objective. One of the things I have accomplished as a leader is enhancing diversity and inclusion in my workplace. As a team leader, I set a good example by encouraging team members from different backgrounds to participate in decision-making and condemning discrimination. Another major accomplishment is increasing innovation among team members by creating an environment where every team member feels free to share their ideas and ensuring that they receive the resources required to try out new ideas within the work environment. I have also improved communication among team members by creating an open line of communication that enables all team members to communicate without sidelining anyone.

How have I used leadership and management principles to accomplish my professional goals?

My main professional goals are to be a transformational leader leading a diverse team and to initiate a major change that contributes to the sustainability of an organization. I have been working on accomplishing these goals using different leadership and management principles. One of the principles of leadership that I have used to accomplish my goals is seeking responsibility and taking responsibility for my actions. This principle has enabled me to initiate changes and see them through by leading by example and being accountable for my actions within the change process. The second principle that I have used is knowing myself and seeking self-improvement. According to Sharma (2013), seeking self-improvement includes understanding one’s weaknesses and working on eliminating them. I have used this principle to continuously improve my leadership skills and competencies, especially in leading diverse teams. I have also used management principles such as division of work and unity of command to maintain collaboration among team members to implement proposed changes successfully. According to Uzuegbu & Nnadozie (2015), unity of command ensures that only one person has the authority to give instructions on what should be done. Unity of command has also helped me monitor the change implementation process based on feedback from team members.

How have I met these expectations and responsibilities?

I have always focused on effective leadership by meeting various leadership expectations and responsibilities. Leadership expectations include developing and inspiring others, building relationships, communicating clearly, and leading change. These expectations are linked to leadership attributes and values. According to Beauvais (2018), leadership attributes are the personal qualities that contribute to effective leadership. They influence how leaders carry out their assigned tasks and responsibilities. The primary responsibilities include conflict management, decision-making, change management, and employee empowerment. These responsibilities are aligned with the main elements of leadership, including respect, time management, responsibility, openness, and trust.

What did I have to do to develop my abilities to meet the expectations and responsibilities in the future?

As a leader, I have encountered various situations that prompt me to meet leadership responsibilities and expectations. For instance, I have built relationships when initiating and implementing change in my workplace to prevent resistance to change and create an environment where everyone impacted by the change feels free to air their concerns. I have also communicated clearly during change implementation by constantly updating stakeholders about the change and sharing all information about the change before the implementation process. I have also led various changes within my workplace to improve the organization’s performance. For example, I initiated a change in the organization’s communication by introducing collaborative communication to ensure a proper flow of information across responsibilities. I have also managed conflicts among employees during the change implementation process by identifying the cause of conflict and engaging the affected parties in finding a solution. Being a leader in change management also requires me to regularly make decisions on what those involved in the change should do and empower them to ensure the change is successful.

The dynamic nature of the business environment requires constant improvement in leadership skills and competencies to effectively deal with challenges, especially in a global leadership setting. One of the things I had to do to develop my ability to meet leadership expectations and responsibilities in the future was to familiarize myself with current leadership trends. I had to read current peer-reviewed articles discussing leadership trends, including leadership responsibilities and expectations during a crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Another thing that I had to do was read case studies on effective leadership and factors that may influence leadership in the future. I also had to read case studies and peer-reviewed articles on changes in leadership styles in the modern leadership environment.
