The Research Design Used

This research study used an ABAB reversal design. The design used the ABA-based approach on a child with autism spectrum disorder who exhibited biting as a maladaptive behavior. It entailed how various applied behavior analysis techniques can be effectively used to minimize the maladaptive behavior frequency and increase the desired behavior in the child (Rilveria, 2022). This design entailed examining the child before and after the intervention.

The Functional Relationship between the Intervention and the Dependent Variable

The ABAB reversal design demonstrates a functional relationship by showing the effect of applied behavior analysis intervention by alternating the presentation of the child’s program. The child’s behavioural data was gathered, and the child was put under direct observation for his biting behavior. The frequency of the biting behavior was also recorded, and a behavior tracking sheet was filled out before the intervention. The functional analysis was performed using experimental manipulations and procedures under five conditions (Rilveria, 2022). For example, under the demand condition, a task would be presented and immediately stopped when the child’s biting behavior happens, which was an escape from the undesired task as the function (Rilveria, 2022). In an attention condition, attention was given to the child via brief physical contact and reprimand when he engaged in biting behavior, which entailed obtaining the function of attention.

Demonstration of a Functional Relationship

The researcher was able to demonstrate a functional relationship. Riviera (2022) determined that biting behavior increased during the initial stages of treatment intervention, which was a change response. However, using the intervention consistently showed the effectiveness of using applied behavior analysis principles to reduce the biting behavior in the child (Rilveria, 2022).
