In the past week, I was introduced to the hospital’s operational framework. I was part of a team that was involved in planning a community outreach program on cancer prevention. The team was diverse and constituted healthcare professionals from all healthcare disciplines. The team’s specific responsibilities were to design a work plan for an upcoming community screening program for cervical cancer and mobilize resources necessary for implementing the program. The team was interactive. Team members demonstrated aspects of teamwork such as open communication, information sharing, and cooperation.
In the past week, I also got to acclimatize myself to the hospital. This included the hospital’s organizational framework and chain of command. I got to know other hospital staff, administrators, and other team members I will be working with. I was also introduced to my supervisor, Eva J. Birring, who was keen to show me around the hospital and educate me on the hospital operationalization framework.
The importance of teamwork and healthcare collaborations in coordination and continuum of care is significant in my academic care. My volunteer experience in the past week highlighted the importance of collaborative approaches in comprehensive care for cancer patients. Working with other team members, I got to appreciate the significance of these approaches in managing clinical complexities and designing care plans for cancer patients. The principles of effective teamwork, such as communication, respect, and information sharing, came into play during these interactive sessions. This is in concert with the theoretical provision on collaborative paradigms learned in class.
