Jesus’s Full Divinity and Full Humanity

In the Old Testament, man could only access God through appointed priests. The atonement of any sin was done through the sacrifice of an animal, and this was done by a High Priest. The High Priest was expected to be without sin when offering the sacrifice, and he was given the power to declare one free of sin once the sacrifice was accepted. However, the priests were human and had sins as well, which they needed to be forgiven of. Additionally, because man lived and still lives in a fallen state, the atonement of sin was never-ending. The Old Testament and the law came to show man that it is impossible to be rid of sin, and only a divine intervention can accomplish that. God, in His wisdom, made it known to man that He was going to make the impossible possible by atoning for the sin of man once and for all. Since there was no human that was without sin, God had to become a man without sin to bear the sin of the world (O’Collins, 2016). Jesus, in becoming a man, was exposed to the same temptation to sin as every man, but He did not sin. He became the High Priest who would offer atonement to all. He also was the sacrifice, and therefore, Jesus sacrificed His life, and his rising from the dead approves Him as an everlasting High Priest who intervenes for us (Riches, 2016).  His life as a sacrifice was sufficient to remove the sin of Adam. Jesus is now seated at the right hand of God and is a High Priest forever in the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 7:17). He forgives whoever accepts the atonement of sin and does not count it against him anymore. Only God was without sin, and that was in the man Jesus. Man, therefore, should not live under the bondage of sin when such a great sacrifice has been offered as atonement (Riches, 2016).
