Jerusalem – A Journey Through History, Faith, and Wonder

Jerusalem – A Journey Through History, Faith, and Wonder

Embarking on a journey through Jerusalem, where thousands of people around the world make a pilgrimage every day, is undeniably a captivating experience beyond mere sightseeing. I had the distinct pleasure of visiting Jerusalem twice during an Arabian Gulf deployment in 2017 and 2019. I enjoyed the visit, and the experiences gained from this venture were breathtaking. Every time I was in Jerusalem, it was an inspirational and educational experience that cannot be found anywhere. Jerusalem offers a spiritual and historical experience that makes it the ideal destination for travelers because of the Wailing Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and The Cenacle.

The Wailing Wall, a sacred site in Jerusalem, was a site to see, full of pilgrims as they pressed their written prayers into its ancient walls. The history of the Wailing Wall goes back to biblical times when it was a prayer location frequently visited by religious persons up to three times a day. Many believers write their prayers and wishes on paper and put them on the wall where they believe that God will receive and answer the message.

The Church of the Holy Sepulcher, a sacred site worshiped by Christians as the location of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, stands as a critical time in Christian history. The queue of people entering the Church can be long and slow, but once inside, the view of shrines and imagery is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The greatest feature of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is that visitors can touch all the relics and religious artifacts, which gives a fully interactive experience.

The Cenacle, a room where Jesus shared his last meal with his disciples and famously depicted in religious art, holds great significance in Christianity. Walking into the Cenacle where the Last Supper was held feels like traveling back through time to a very significant period in world history. The architecture of the Cenacle is something to appreciate—the building is almost 800 years old, and it is still in pristine condition.

In conclusion, Jerusalem’s rich history and religious atmosphere, such as the Wailing Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and the Cenacle, make it a top choice for travelers seeking a once-in-a-lifetime spiritual experience. Looking back at my trip to Jerusalem, the only recommendation I would give is to plan the trip with actual tour guides, as I could see many guides with their flags just constantly informing groups of people about the history of each site.
