Issues in Project Management

In the article ‘The 4 Big Issues In Project Management Today’ by Elizabeth Harrin, Harrin rightly points out that multiple issues in project management are impossible to discuss under one topic. Project managers are challenged to ensure that projects are completed within the agreed time, scope, and budget. Enterprises waste many resources trying to sort out project management issues that they encounter while implementing their projects. The article’s author identifies leadership, risk, value, and talent management as the four major problems encountered in project management (Harrin, 2014). I agree with the author that these four are among the significant issues faced in project management. However, matters to do with scope and resources are very critical to the success of a project and should not be omitted while discussing project management issues.

Even though some critics could argue that two issues, scope and resources, are covered under the larger blanket of leadership, it is crucial to explicitly single out the two since they can jeopardize a project even when leadership is present. For instance, limited resources could hinder the successful completion even if the project manager has excellent leadership skills. As such, an organization and the project managers must work together to ensure adequate resources are allocated for a given project. Additionally, scope creep could jeopardize a project’s success even if all the factors mentioned are perfect. Consider a client who keeps making changes to the scope of the project. Such a project is likely to be a failure even if the manager is an excellent leader. Based on these arguments, project scope and resources are important factors in project management and should not be left out while discussing major issues.
