Thoughts on Taking the Test
Taking this test has enabled me to find out the potential biases that I might have in regard to age. I feel that the test has simply confirmed these biases, some of which are implicit. For instance, I realized that I have a general preference for younger people as opposed to older people since I consider younger people better at tasks. However, Kaufmann’s (2017) research shows that there is no actual evidence that older adults are less competent than younger adults at work. Potential Bias
While taking the test, I realized that I was quick to associate positive traits with young people, whereas the negative traits I easily associated with older people. For instance, in the test, I quickly associated negative traits like ugly and annoying with older adults, whereas positive traits like pleasing, beautiful, and excellent, I linked to younger people.
Additional Thoughts
I believe that society has made most people link negative traits like being stubborn and bothersome to older adults, whereas young people are often linked with positive characteristics. This has impacted the manner in which older adults are viewed and even treated in society. Most older adults are denied opportunities at the workplace due to their age (Kaufmann et al., 2017). It is essential for such stereotypes to be eliminated, especially since the aging population is on the rise today. Furthermore, associating such negative traits with older adults causes many people to be afraid of aging. In reality, there are more people who are highly energetic in their old age, and some are even able to accomplish things that young people are not able to. By encouraging the interaction between the old and the young in the workplace and even in education, there will be a lot to be learned between these two groups of people.
