Are extracurricular activities frills, or should they be considered an integral part of the curriculum?

My answer: Extracurricular activities are never frills but should be considered an essential part of the curriculum. First, they assist kids and learners in growing emotionally and socially. One board member pointed out that the lessons children learn during ball field activities are among the most vital lessons they will learn in school (Kauchak & Eggen, 2015). Children learn how to be graceful winners and good losers through extracurricular activities such as football. Such lessons will last a lifetime. Even activities such as drama clubs and bands help children learn vital skills such as negotiation and self-confidence that they can never learn in regular classes.

Is the idea of fee waivers for pay-for-play activities a good idea? Can it be an effective way to encourage broader participation in extracurricular activities?

My answer: As one board member highlighted, the idea of fee waivers is good for play-for-play activities because it has worked in other states. However, it is not an effective way of encouraging extracurricular activities because it will cause discrimination and embarrassment and reduce participation, especially among learners from low-income families. A waiver will make other learners from unprivileged families feel embarrassed waiting for district charity (Kauchak & Eggen, 2015). This will embarrass them and their families, making participation drop and hitting the low-income kids the hardest. Therefore, this idea is not good because even if it cuts expenses that most taxpayers call frills, it will nurture inequality among learners in school.

What other solutions could you suggest to these board members?

My answer: The other solution is to plan a parent meeting and involve the parents. They would be willing to give money for extracurricular activities. Secondly, the school can organize fundraisings to support extracurricular activities. Thirdly, the school can seek the help of clubs, games organizations, or donors to support the extracurricular activities. Lastly, the school can also review the fees and incorporate extracurricular costs to run the activities.
