Internet Sources-Literature Review
My first impression is that the literature review is inadequate and of poor quality. This is because, in the contemporary world, anybody can post anything on the internet, including those who are not experts in specific fields of study. Any user who accesses information on a particular area of study is vulnerable to unreliable, false, and irrelevant information on the search topic. This is what Kurt & Emiroglu (2018) called ”infollution’,’ meaning the concept of pollution of information on the internet. Therefore, overreliance on the internet for literature review is likely to lead to misinformation because as many people invade the internet, information is prone to alterations, invalid contributions from non-experts, and falsehood. In a research study by Kurt & Emiroglu (2018), information pollution or ”pollution” refers to the presence of inconsistent, unreliable, out-of-date, unnecessary, and commercial information that is not published by experts and is presented on the internet in a disordered manner.
However, not all information on the internet is ”infolluted.” Therefore, the novice researcher can use the internet to find credible sources for the literature review. However, they have to evaluate the sources using the coverage, currency, objectivity, authority, and accuracy evaluation criteria to determine the credibility and quality of a source. Journal articles are the most advisable sources based on scientific research studies. The databases the new researcher can use include the EBSCOhost, ProQuest, Google Scholar, the book tab of Google to access books, and websites with URLs with .edu/.ac., .gov, and .org. According to the City University of Hong Kong (2022), these are the credible, trusted sources a researcher can use from the internet. Besides, Brändström (2011) also contends that a huge amount of online information is misleading, inaccurate, or of questionable value. Therefore, modern teachers face the challenge of teaching their students about proper internet usage. The new researcher should, therefore, seek the guidance of their supervisor, professor, or tutor on how to use the internet responsibly for their literature review.
