In the highlighted videos, it is clear that student participation is important for learning. This strength is clearly exhibited as the students recount the previous lesson and make predicative statements about the current session. In addition, the inclusion of play and songs incorporates fun in the lesson. The children are using songs to learn concepts and remember the same. The recorded songs are also being used to teach the alphabet, making it interesting.
Role-playing and visual cues enhance the learning process as learners remember the concepts through the images. The main weakness is the lack of active participation in some of the videos, such as the Montessori. However, this particular video features an online class, which is challenging due to the short span of concentration among children.
What differentiation strategies did they use and were they effective?
One of the differentiation strategies that the instructors have used is compacting. Compacting allows the elimination of teaching and student practice, especially if the students have mastered the concept. For instance, one of the kindergarten students is asked to state how many ways the class can obtain the number 5. The student’s answer is six, which is proven right after the class works it out.
What technology did they utilize? What could be done to ensure the technology is effective in reaching all students?
The use of technology is vivid in the Montessori online session. The instructors utilize the radio to play the recorded music. This use of technology enhances the learning process and facilitates it in a non-physical setting. Effective technology applications should consider the needs of different students to enrich the entire lesson.
How will you apply what you have learned to your future professional practice?
To apply these aspects to my future professional practice, I intend to incorporate differentiation strategies that work for my student population and technologies that enhance the learning process.
