Insightful Interviewing

Insightful Interviewing

Interviews play a vital role in understanding a job applicant’s appropriateness for a vacant position. This paper provides a list of questions that will be used to identify whether a candidate is suitable for a management position, anticipated responses and how they might help to determine the fit of the candidate, and a review of past interview experience. I have developed five questions to help me identify whether a candidate is fit for a management position. These interview questions revolve around five crucial traits and characteristics managers consider during interviews. These are optimism, financial acumen, experience with merchandising/advertising, fosters team building, and fosters innovation (see – Appendix).

The Types of Responses I Might Get From the Questions

I would expect the candidate to mention career development as one of their career goals. According to Vande Griek et al. (2018), career development is a process that includes choosing a career and improving the skills needed in the career. Career development goals are aligned with personal goals. Cottrell (2010) argues that a personal development plan can be used to identify career goals and determine the skills that should be developed to meet the goals. Therefore, I would also expect the candidate to identify one of their personal goals as acquiring new knowledge, competencies, and skills that can be applied within their career and interactions within their personal lives. Candidates who specify the knowledge, skills, and competencies they want to develop will be perceived as optimistic because they are confident they will meet their goals.

I developed a question regarding financial acumen (see – Appendix). To demonstrate financial understanding, I would expect the candidate to identify universal financial management principles acceptable in all organizations, such as risk and return time value of money and cash flow. According to Saharan (2021), financial acumen is the proper understanding of financial concepts applied in financial management. A candidate who clearly explains how financial principles affect businesses has the required financial acumen to manage financial resources in the business setting. I would also expect the candidates to mention how different social media channels can improve marketing. A candidate knowledgeable of the advantages and disadvantages of using specific social media channels in marketing will be considered experienced in marketing/advertising. Also, I expect candidates to indicate the challenges they experienced as a team leader and how they resolved them. Notably, the main cue for the team building trait will be the approaches used to address the conflicts among team members. I expect the candidates to mention that they prefer working under minimum or no supervision. A preference for autonomy will be the main cue for innovativeness.

Past Interviews Review

How did you prepare for the interview?

Preparing for an interview can be challenging, especially due to the anxiety caused by uncertainty about the questions that will be asked. During my internship application process, I was called for an interview at one of the organizations the school dean had recommended. I prepared for the interview by reading about the company’s mission, vision, values, roles, and responsibilities in the vacant position.

Were you asked the types of questions you were expecting? Discuss.

I was asked some questions that I was expecting, such as the organization’s goals, mission, and vision, and my goals and expectations. I was also asked how the organization would help me meet my personal and career goals and what I would bring to the organization.

What was the most difficult question you were asked, and why?

The most difficult question was my salary expectation. The question was difficult because I did not want to set an unrealistically high price and seem money-oriented. I also did not want to set an unrealistically low price and create a perception that I did not value my worth and contribution to the organization.

If you were hired, did you feel the interview was representative of the position? Explain.

Although I was unsure whether my responses to the interview panel were satisfactory, I was hired. I feel the interview represented the position because I needed to demonstrate some of the skills needed in the position, such as critical thinking and communication skills.

What did you learn about yourself from the interview that you will use as you interview others?

The interview enlightened me on my communication skills. I learned that I have good communication skills that I can leverage to convince people and support my thoughts. I can use my communication skills as I interview others to explain my rationale for agreeing or disagreeing with them.
