Being an employee of Starship Company has been the best experience for me. I can classify the working environment as the best environment I have ever worked in since I began practicing my information technology career. The company’s climate is supportive, and leaders are always at the forefront to ensure that employees get all the support they need to complete the tasks assigned to them. The company has a suggestion box where employees are allowed to anonymously express their concerns and require help. The company has also ensured that there is a supervisor in every department who is expected to ensure that employees have what they require to perform effectively. The company also recently introduced a guidance and counseling department to help employees deal with mental issues, especially those related to the hardships created by the Covid-19 pandemic. My assessment of the company’s climate aligns with the results of my Communication Climate Inventory. The total defensive score in the inventory was 78, while the supportive score was 36. The interpretation of these scores shows that the company has a supportive climate because the defensive score ranged between 76 to 90, which is categorized as supportive, while the supportive score ranged between 18 to 36 hence matching with the supportive classification.

The communication climate affects motivation because it creates a sense of belonging among employees due to the fact that their ideas are listened to and considered in decision-making. According to Rajhans (2009), communication also motivates employees by increasing trust in the workplace, increasing commitment to the organization, and job satisfaction when they feel that there is effective communication from management. Siagian (2012) argues that the competence of leaders in communication in interpersonal communication also increases employee motivation to develop the tasks assigned to them and develop a need to increase their capability in the form of skills, expertise, time, and energy to complete tasks and fulfill obligations to achieve the company’s goals. Communication climate also motivates employees by enabling them to be part of the decision-making process hence developing a sense of pride when their suggestions facilitate the achievement of an organization’s goals (Ramadanty & Martinus,2016; Chitrao, 2014). It is, however, important to select the most appropriate communication strategies that keep employees engaged throughout the company’s communication process.

Although Starship company has established a good communication strategy that promotes collaboration in the workplace, there are various strategies that can be used to improve the company’s communication climate. One of the strategies is using many channels of communication to ensure that there are no misunderstandings. According to Adu-Oppong &Agyin-Birikorang (2014), using multiple communication channels prevents misunderstanding because employees can confirm the message sent to them based on consistency in the messages sent on different channels. The second strategy is using diagonal communication. This type of communication includes exchanging information between different organizational levels without considering the chain of command (Du,2020). The main advantage of diagonal communication is that it allows employees to freely express themselves hence improving inter-departmental coordination and increasing employee morale (Papa et al., 2007). Employees also have a responsibility to focus on developing skills that facilitate the creation of a supportive communication climate. I would therefore like to improve my interpersonal skills so that I can relate with other employees better understand their needs and offer support where I can. I also need to improve my communication skills so that I can express my ideas clearly and get the support I need from my fellow employees and management.
