Influence Culture and the Competitive Environment

Influence Culture and the Competitive Environment

Ethics refers to the moral principles and values guiding individual and collective behaviour in making decisions and determining right or wrong. In the context of organizations, ethics plays a crucial role in shaping how they conduct their operations and interact with various stakeholders, including employees, customers, and the broader society (De Bakker et al., 2019). Culture profoundly influences ethical decisions within an organization. Organizational culture sets the tone for acceptable behaviour and values, shaping employees’ ethical judgments and actions. According to Blundo-Canto et al. (2019), a culture that prioritizes transparency, honesty, and integrity tends to foster ethical behaviour, while a culture that values profit above all else can lead to unethical actions, such as fraud or exploitation. Also, a competitive environment exerts a significant influence on ethical decisions. In highly competitive industries, the pressure to gain a competitive edge may tempt organizations to engage in unethical practices. The fear of losing market share or profitability can lead to decisions that compromise ethical standards. However, ethical behaviour can enhance a company’s competitive advantage in the long run by attracting ethical consumers and fostering trust among stakeholders.

The companies above are competitors in the technology sector. They are all reputable in producing excellent technological products such as mobile phones and computers for the target market. Considering the core values identified, it is apparent that the companies are competing on the core values front. Therefore, no brand among them will be willing to sacrifice the commitment to ethical conduct in the competitive landscape. For instance, the core values of Apple Inc. align with the corporate culture of making great products, as spelt out by the company CEO, Tim Cook (Mickle, 2020). The same can be said for the other two brands, as indicated for every core value identified.
