Individual Initial Reflection
What is your understanding of board governance within the context of strategic planning?
Board governance is a leadership framework including a group of people, such as appointed officials and trustees, responsible for delegating roles and responsibilities and enforcing policies, procedures, rules, and regulations within an organization. In the healthcare setting, the board of governance is a group of qualified medical practitioners who collaborate with trustees to manage resources within a healthcare organization (Chambers, 2012). The main role of a board of governance in strategic planning is to identify the organization’s priorities, find resources, establish goals and objectives, and allocate financial resources to support strategic decisions. The board of governance also monitors the implementation of the strategic plan and recommends changes to achieve the desired outcome.
What is your understanding of organizational leadership within the context of strategic planning?
Organizational leadership includes setting strategic goals and motivating employees to successfully complete assigned tasks. The main role of organizational leadership in strategic planning is to implement strategic decisions. According to Narikae et al. (2017), organizational strategies are executed by middle management, top management, staff in non-managerial positions, and lower management. Leaders should ensure that everyone in the organization understands what is expected of them in achieving strategic goals.
What are the differences between leadership and board governance in establishing strategic planning for a healthcare organization?
Leadership in establishing strategic planning for healthcare organizations includes creating a sense of direction for employees and making difficult decisions that may affect operations within the healthcare setting. Leaders in the healthcare setting also identify opportunities that can be leveraged to improve patient quality of care and patient satisfaction. In contrast, board governance focuses on implementing strategic policies within the healthcare setting and establishing appropriate collaborations with stakeholders to manage resources effectively. Board governance also ensures that structures, laws, and policies are observed when executing tasks within the healthcare setting.
Are both needed and necessary?
Board governance and organizational leadership are needed because they improve the management of resources within the healthcare setting and the implementation of decisions to meet all stakeholders’ needs. For example, organizational leadership provides guidance and purpose to staff within the healthcare setting and helps stakeholders understand an organization’s goals. On the other hand, board governance increases accountability among people in leadership positions and staff, leading to effective leadership and the delivery of quality care to patients.
How do these two leadership structures work together to execute a strategic plan?
Organizational leadership and board governance complement each other in implementing a strategic plan. Effective organizational leadership creates effective board governance by facilitating collaboration among people in leadership positions. Board governance also supports organizational leadership by developing leadership frameworks and arrangements (Hurth & Kravatzky, 2019). The board of governance also promotes a shared vision and objectives by clarifying the organization’s goals. Therefore, healthcare organizations should implement board governance and organizational leadership to enhance leadership effectiveness.
