Incivility and Healthful Environment

Incivility and Healthful Environment

Incivility at the workplace has been implicated in reducing work effectiveness and consequent reduction in output. Additionally, it is associated with causing emotional and physical distress among victims, affecting the quality of care in a healthcare setting (Armstrong, 2018). I witnessed workplace civility between a nurse practitioner and a relative of a patient. The altercation between the two parties started when the patient’s relative sought access to the patient’s file and information regarding a diagnostic procedure requested on the patient. The nurses objected to her demands insisting that the patient’s data was confidential and that the relative had no right to access that information. The situation escalated when the patient insulted and abused the nurse. The nurse got irritated and engaged the relative in a fistfight.

The incident surprised everyone. Being the only other person present in the room, I called security, who resolved the case. After the incident, the nurse was summoned to the hospital’s disciplinary committee while the patient’s relative was detained for further interrogations. The nurse would later be suspended for six months with half pay and later transferred to another hospital department. He was also assigned to a psychotherapist.

The incident negatively impacted the workplace. A mixed reaction was elicited among the hospital employees, with some wanting the nurse to take full responsibility and resign, and others feeling that the patient was to be blamed. Others blamed the administration for taking what they defined as a severe and unwarranted response. In the midst of all these, the workplace got divided with internal rumbles emanating from the group. The hospital’s output reduced significantly, as portrayed in their monthly financial report. The situation would have been prevented in several ways. The nurse was supposed to act ethically and not engage the patient in a fistfight. The conflict resolution committee and the human resource management of the hospital were to enhance their efforts in educating the workers on conflict prevention strategies.

A healthy work environment can be ensured by enhancing communication between healthcare teams and between patients and caregivers (Kennedy & Kennedy-Baker, 2020). Additionally, all employees should be equipped with conflict resolution and prevention strategies to curtail such incidences. Caregivers should also be equipped with knowledge of workplace ethics to prevent them from engaging in potentially harmful activities (Park, 2018). Addressing staffing issues may also be vital in preventing workplace violence (DeNisco, 2022).
