Improving Audience Engagement in Community Health Presentations

Improving Audience Engagement in Community Health Presentations

The community teaching project was a success based on the positive feedback I received from the audience. One of the presentation’s strengths was the clarity of the information shared with the audience. I ensured that the terms used in the presentation were terms that the audience was familiar with to enhance the clarity of the content shared. I also ensured that the concepts discussed in the presentation were explained in detail while considering the questions asked by the audience to ensure that everything was clearly understood. However, I realized that there is one area of opportunity for improvement that I should consider when preparing for my next presentation. The area of opportunity for improvement is audience engagement. According to Maher (2015), audience engagement includes creating a welcoming and open environment that encourages the audience to share their opinions and thoughts freely. Interacting with the audience during the presentation helped me learn that asking the audience questions can help to determine what they know about the concepts in the presentation, thus acting as a guide on the areas to emphasize. This information will help me prepare for future presentations because I can use it to design questions related to every concept in my presentation and acquire more insights about the concepts from the answers given by the audience.

According to Usera (2023), the conventional presentation approach, which involves a one-way monologue performed by the speaker, presents challenges for the audience, including distraction and boredom. Therefore, it is crucial to consider various techniques that I can apply in the future to enhance audience engagement, such as requesting feedback from the audience about the presentation and using the feedback to improve the presentation. For example, in the community teaching presentation, the audience offered feedback about my performance during the presentation based on the findings they acquired from audience reaction sessions.

The audience reaction sessions were used as an evaluation tool to determine the areas I performed well and those that needed improvement. According to Meyer & Hurst (2020), audience reaction sessions can provide actual, immediate feedback for the presenter. For example, the audience reaction sessions, in my case, allowed me to get comments about my presentation’s strengths and weaknesses. The audience noted that the presentation was clear on what must be done to avoid developing diseases. The audience also commented that I should discuss how to address the social determinants of health. These comments are essential in preparing for future presentations because they are a guide on what the audience expects from similar presentations.
