The identity or role confusion crisis is typically resolved positively through identity achievement and one’s gain of fidelity to particular values and goals. Identity achievement is a process that involves active exploration, where the adolescent has made a solid commitment to a highly developed set of values and beliefs. It consists of the awareness of one’s consistency in self with the passage of time and the recognition of such character by other people (Lumen, 2021). Adolescents who attain identity achievement have actively examined and explored varying beliefs and values and have settled on the most significant ones. They can sort out who they would like to be and their purpose in life. They also know their priorities and are positive and confident in the beliefs and values that they have chosen. Some adolescents are likely to take on the roles and values expected by their parents, whereas others deviate from this to align these roles and values with those of a peer group (Lumen, 2021).
When an individual experiences identity achievement, they can have a sense of self-knowledge and awareness, a sense of coherence and consistency in self-knowledge, goals, and beliefs, a sense of personal control of the choices they make and the consequent outcomes, a sense of direction and foals and a sense of continuity in the future and history (Lumen, 2021). According to Feldman (2018), attaining identity involves knowing one’s strengths and roles and discovering who one is. An individual unable to reach a stable identity will likely take on an unacceptable part and have trouble maintaining intimate and committed relations with others. Finally, identity development is integral to understanding self and participation in social systems.
