Identifying and Cultivating Alliances 520

Identifying and Cultivating Alliances 520

Question 1

The previously concluded personality test confirms that my leadership style aligns well with personality typology while my personality traits are consistent with my leadership. My leadership style combines the leadership archetypes of the collaborator, the provider, and the harmonizer, while my personality is composed of being emotionally intelligent and an effective communicator. My leadership style aligns with my personality typology in that being a collaborator, a provider, and a harmonizer requires high levels of emotional intelligence and effective communication skills. For instance, as a collaborator, effective communication is among the major soft skills and a factor that creates an environment that fosters effective team collaboration (Wei et al., 2019). Additionally, being able to communicate effectively means that as a leader, I must understand the emotions and moods of others in order to bring them together to work collaboratively. Understanding the emotions of others requires high levels of emotional intelligence. Notably, emotional intelligence is a critical leadership competence as it allows an individual to understand and appreciate the feelings and perspectives of others and their concerns and handle others with empathy (Weiszbrod, 2020).

Emotional intelligence as a personal trait is also consistent with my provider and harmonizer leadership archetypes. Being a provider and a harmonizer means being responsible for others’ well-being by creating a supportive and enabling environment to thrive. To live by the ideals of the provider and harmonizer leadership styles requires being consistent in emotional intelligence in ways that enable the leader to understand emotional cues, even if expressed subtly, and respond accordingly. It also requires being consistent in communication with others in ways that express empathy and concern in ways that can help resolve any conflicts and disputes they may have at work or in their personal lives.

Question 2

Professional relationships in healthcare settings are essential for better patient, provider, and organizational outcomes (Cristina Gasparino et al., 2021). The top three strategies I will use to develop professional relationships are active listening, open communication in all interactions, and recognizing and appreciating others for their contributions during collaborative and individual roles. To begin with, active listening as an effective strategy for developing professional relationships involves the listener remaining attentive by asking reflective questions and being empathetic enough to understand what the communicator actually means and hence, creating a sense of trust and respect. Active listening is an essential skill in effective communication and developing relationships as it allows the listener to understand the speaker and develop a deeper connection with them (Spataro & Bloch, 2017).

As with active listening, creating an environment that promotes open communication can help develop professional relationships as it allows others to share their opinions and perspectives without judgment. Open communication can allow others to feel respected and be themselves, which can help strengthen relationships. In addition, appreciating and recognizing others for their efforts has a similar effect, as it can create an environment that motivates others to be open to deeper professional relationships.

Regardless of the time or efforts put into developing professional networking relationships, such relationships can be severed if others in the relationship consistently express behaviours that are considerably unethical and negative. Networking relationships can also be severed if the relationships no longer align with my professional goals and values. Consistent unethical and negative behaviour may erode the motivation to pursue career goals and risk losing professional opportunities and even licensure. Severing networking relationships may have negative ramifications, such as losing access to critical connections and friendships. I can handle such ramifications by ensuring all details leading to severing the relationships remain private and respectful to the individuals from the severed relationships. I can also focus on developing other relationships and investing more in developing professionally.
