After skimming through the first source, the book, I realized how prevalent human trafficking is today and has been a big problem for many years. While slavery has been abolished, human trafficking seems to have taken its place, whereby people are trafficked for either sex or labour. The author, Cullen DuPont, says a country can be the source of slavery (source countries are primarily developing countries), a transit, or a destination (mostly industrialized countries). Subsequently, the second source, the press article by National Geographic, gave more specific details into the span of atrocities of human trafficking, particularly the amount of money it brings about. Shockingly, human trafficking, especially the sex trafficking of minors, is a multi-billion dollar industry, meaning millions of children are trafficked annually.

In his article, Haynes (2014) talks about how using celebrities as activists for human trafficking is detrimental to the efforts to eradicate these atrocities. He highlights why this is the case, including a lack of expertise in the area or a lack of accuracy in their efforts. The second scholarly article gives statistics that are more specific on the numbers around human trafficking worldwide. These numbers include 72% of human trafficking victims being women and young girls, the industry is worth around 150 billion dollars, and in 2016, children comprised 20% of sex trafficking victims. Further, the Aljazeera news piece highlighted how women in developing countries like Iraq are vulnerable to crimes of human trafficking. The internet source, on the other hand, talks about how perpetrators of human trafficking are often people known to the victims and that vulnerable individuals, like children in foster care, are at high risk of being victims of human trafficking.

Finally, the non-traditional source was a TED talk by Noy Thrupkaew, who talks about how close everyone is to human trafficking without even realizing it. For example, she explains how the products individuals use every day have a high possibility of being produced by workers who have been trafficked. She explains that people must research their products and ensure they do not support companies that use forced labour for production. The scholarly articles, the book, the press article, and the news sources have a high research value as they are from credible sources. The Internet and non-traditional sources are also valuable, but the information has to be verified.

Instructions
Choose the topic you wish to research for Modules 2 and 3. You may choose from the following issues: child labour, human trafficking, climate change and energy policy, OPEC, or space exploration. You will research this topic for all the assignments and discussions in Modules 2 and 3.

Access the online Library Databases to begin searching for sources. Try starting your search in Academic Search Complete, as it is the widest searching, most complete database. However, you can search the more narrowly focused databases if you wish. For this discussion, you will also need to search the internet for some sources, but please use the databases for as many as possible.

Your goal is to find a wide variety of perspectives on your topic. For this discussion, you should find and read:

One book (You may skim the book to find the most critical ideas presented.)

One popular press article (A popular press article is printed in a periodical intended for a general audience, such as Time, Newsweek, and National Geographic.)

Two scholarly articles (An academic article is printed in a journal intended for a specific, expert audience; one of these articles should come from a peer-reviewed journal.)

One news source

One internet source

One non-traditional source (think about films, podcasts, TED Talks, etc.)

Think: What voice do you hear in each source you have found? Whose perspective does that voice represent? What does that voice add to your understanding of the larger conversation? Are some voices (sources) more credible than others? Are some voices more critical than others?

Write: In your initial post, you should list the sources’ titles, authors, periodical titles, and publish dates as appropriate to each source. Consider the rhetorical situation for each source (think specifically about the audience and purpose), and discuss how the source adds to your more profound understanding of the conversation. What is the research value of each of these types of sources?

Post one original post, and reply to at least two classmates. In your replies to peers, compare your valuations on the different perspectives. Discuss why you value one source over another, and try to help one another see the importance of every kind of voice. Try to further the discussion in your replies by asking thoughtful questions, adding exciting information, or connecting your reply to the material we are discussing.
