Human Services- From Humanitarian to Human Services Professional Practitioner

I grew up in an area in the city that was stricken with homeless people. They lived on the sidewalks, overpasses, and even parks. Some had tents; some did not. It only got worse over time. The site of this, going to and from work, would break my heart, especially on those cold nights. Therefore, I decided to put together an annual blanket drive. I collected gently used blankets from all over and handed them to the homeless. This was an uplifting and heart-filling moment when I first handed them out. Seeing their faces light up every time I did a drive warmed my heart. It made me want to do more and provide more. Accordingly, I recruited more people and even included my children, who learned humility, respect, and humbleness. From this event, I have come to appreciate the value of humanity and kindness. It is sad that the world is filled with inequalities, yet one does not need to have a lot to ease the burden on other people.

Establishing self-sufficiency among client populations can be considered one of the most influential roles of a human services practitioner. According to Sparkman-Key et al. (2018), this role fosters helping relationships with clients and requires one to develop specific knowledge and skills like cultural competency and empathy. Human services practitioners can foster self-sufficiency by offering counseling to clients to help them overcome the various challenges they face and enable them to attain autonomy. Human services practitioners can also help meet daily living needs and connect clients to resources that help them attain the help they need. Also, according to the American Public Human Services Association (2022), human services practitioners can advocate for clients to help advance economic and social mobility and lessen such issues as racial disparities.
