Human Environmental Hazards

Some human activities lead to the pollution of the environment. Environmental health hazards include anything hindering human well-being, damaging property, and destroying the environment. Environmental hazards influence human health negatively, leading to illnesses. The four types of environmental hazards are cultural, biological, physical, and chemical (Wright, 2014).

Cultural hazards

The behaviors and lifestyles of individuals bring about cultural hazards. Individuals self-impose this type of hazard because they gain pleasure from it. However, they do not consider the adverse effects, such as death, that are associated with the hazards. Most casualty cases originate from cultural hazards such as drug overdose leading to death. Moreover, cultural hazards are preventable by changing bad habits and lifestyles. Examples include drug use, obesity, and vehicle accidents (Wright, 2014).

Biological hazards

Biological hazards are mainly epidemics and plagues (Wright, 2014). Components of the environment, such as pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and protozoans, cause biological hazards that can be fatal. Most diseases arise from infections and parasites found in our environment. An example of a biological hazard is malaria, which affects most people living in tropical areas. Malaria is spread by the female anopheles mosquito that carries plasmodium and injects it into an individual’s body.

Physical hazards

Physical hazards are naturally occurring disasters (Wright, 2014). Disasters such as floods and forest fires destroy the environment and cause harm to human beings. These disasters cause the destruction of property and can be fatal. An example is the winter storms.

Chemical hazards

Chemical hazards are manufactured chemicals that people use in their daily lives. These chemicals are present in products such as paints and pesticides. Human beings come in contact with these chemicals during the use and disposal of the chemical. After continuous exposure to most chemicals, cancers develop. Examples of chemical hazards are pesticides (Wright, 2014). In conclusion, environmental hazards influence the well-being of individuals. Only cultural hazards can be prevented, while the rest cannot be prevented.
