How would you Describe the Role of Language use in your Relationship? Is it Healthy?
Prompt: How would you describe the role of language use in your relationship? Is it healthy? Explain using concepts from the chapter.
Language use in my relationship with my brother has largely been healthy. Language has had a multifaceted impact on my relationship with my brother. One area in which language has had a meaningful impact is when we need to express emotions. I always try to avoid making every conversation all about me to avoid sounding like a conversational narcist (Adler and Proctor 196). The ‘I’ language sounds egoistical, and my brother and I have successfully avoided sounding egotistical.
Also, language use has played a significant role in helping us resolve conflicts. Just like any other relationship, conflicts in a sibling relationship are inevitable. We create a safe environment where we can peacefully resolve our conflicts by avoiding egoistic conversations and blame games. We have created a norm that allows us to have honest and transparent conversations.
Further, my relationship and interaction with my brother made me realize that language is somewhat gendered. According to Adler and Proctor, men are primarily interested in conversations on sports, music, and current events (199). On the other hand, females like conversations touching on domestic subjects and weight. We try as much to discuss topics of common interest to avoid social awkwardness whenever we hang out.
Prompt: Describe the role of social media in your relationship. Explain using concepts from the chapter on social media.
Social media use has had an influence on my relationship with my brother. I must admit that I check my brother’s social media profiles from time to time. One thing about social media is that it brings out the ‘green-eyed monster of jealousy’ (Adler and Proctor 199). Sometimes, I get cautious about the individuals my brother hangs out with as an elder sister.
Also, social media use has taught me that online behavior is somewhat different from real-life interactions. Whenever someone posts or communicates with others on social media, there is a temptation to express oneself freely or use insulting language (Adler and Proctor 54). Having realized this, most of my interactions with my brother are in-person. Avoiding social media interactions has enabled me to have more personal connections since we separated due to academic and career pursuits.
The social media influence on my relationship with my brother is measured. We try as much as we can to avoid interacting on social media, aware of the adverse relational dynamics accompanying social media sites. As indicated above, interacting with loved ones on social media, including family members, may breed jealousy and rude conversations. Making personal contact over social media interaction fosters healthy relationships.
