Classroom games are a great teaching strategy for teaching mathematics because they boost the engagement of early childhood learners while at the same time making learning fun (Van de Walle, 2018). Additionally, games help stimulate creativity because children can display their skills in addition and subtraction. Mathematics teachers should strive to incorporate math teaching games while teaching lower elementary classrooms to encourage classroom participation amongst all learners (Van de Walle, 2018). In this discussion, I will review the Roll and Race Single Digit Addition and Subtraction game and how I can apply it to help first-grade learners develop fluency. How To Play
Divide learners into groups and give every group ten blacks and two dice
Player number one will begin by rolling the dice
Player 2 then takes a turn
Players will keep alternating their space, with each consecutive player taking a turn to play the game.
This game is a dice game that students apply to a problem given to them to solve. It provides learners with the opportunity to learn simple addition and subtraction. Students will roll a dice and use that number to fill the table. If they get the number correctly, they move to the next spot around the board game (Bobis, 2018). The game helps learners understand how numbers follow each other from the smallest to the most significant number while adding or subtracting.
Group Activity Using Technology That Could Be Used to Reinforce Facts
A worksheet is an example of a technology that can help boost student engagement while teaching roll and race additional and subtraction games. Students should be divided into groups of mixed abilities and given a worksheet to fill in answers. This strategy helps regenerate their interest in learning while at the same time boosting their ability to interact with resources (Bobis, 2018). The work of the worksheet is to help transcend disciplinary boundaries while simultaneously boosting learners’ level of solving memory-based problems in mathematics. Worksheets also help young children to develop their psychomotor skills while at the same time helping them boost their collaborative skills, hence better communication.
How to Apply the Game to Develop Fluency
As a teacher, I will apply this game to help students decode words quickly, increasing their word recognition and reading. Additionally, because I intend to help even the struggling learners, this game will allow them to improve their engagement; hence, through repetition, they will master the numbers and increase their ability to recall. Lastly, the game will help me understand my learners in terms of those who can read words first, being able to differentiate those with high word recognition skills from others, hence coming up with a strategy to help the struggling learners. Because this is an interactive learning session, the game will help students realize the same count-on strategy while performing addition and subtraction, which helps to strengthen their ability to recall basic counting.
