How Healthy Is Your Workplace

How Healthy Is Your Workplace

Civility is important in any workplace, and it ensures that the patient’s health outcomes are improved. According to the Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory (2015), my workplace assessment score is 60/100, which is considered moderately healthy. The high scores were in several areas, such as advancement opportunities that staff have, teamwork, and the extent of training. The lower scores were in terms of the compensation and lack of diverse views, which I think was because the organization is an agency funded by the state.

The first thing that surprised me about the results is that the workplace is ranked high when it comes to civility. The organization is efficient, and I have never been in conflict with my fellow workers nor experienced any arguments or disagreements with workers. Everyone is respectful, and this has been crucial in encouraging civility. The second thing that surprised me was that the level of teamwork is very high and that everyone in the workplace collaborates with each other. Before the assessment, I knew that the results would be high regarding collaboration, and the assessment confirmed it. According to Clark (2015), when a culture of collaboration is encouraged, it leads to a combination of the different skills and abilities of the healthcare workers in the care setting. The results reveal that the workplace is ranked highly in regard to civility. Civility is important since it involves respecting others and being aware of their differences. In addition, the results suggest that the workplace is characterized by several concepts, such as team collaboration, effective communication, and mutual respect (Clark et al., 2011).

Griffin and Clark (2014) focus on the concepts of lateral violence and incivility in the nursing practice. These concepts mean bullying and uncivil behaviors in the workplace. Nurse-to-nurse incivility is widespread in nursing and can lead to unwanted effects. The concepts relate to the results of the Work Environment Assessment since I have witnessed a case where bullying resulted in a high-stress environment. The nurse who was bullied often felt anxious, fearful, isolated, and humiliated, thereby limiting their output.

There is a need to communicate as a way of improving and creating stronger teams. Broome and Marshall (2021) suggest that communication is key in the workplace, and it involves sensitivity and self-knowledge to what others need and want to know. If the other person’s needs are not considered, they can start having negative behaviors. For instance, due to a lack of communication, the bullied nurse felt that she was unwanted. She often received instructions from both the head nurse and physician and since she did not know how to handle the situation, the head nurse bullied her often. Due to that, the bullied nurse often ignored the orders from the head nurse.

To conclude, incivility harms nursing practice in the long term and should be avoided. This ensures that the organization will remain operational and it leads to improved health outcomes. Without civility, the employees will not work as a team.

Question

How healthy is your workplace?

You may think your current organization operates seamlessly, or you may feel it has many issues. You may experience or even observe things that give you pause. Yet, much as you wouldn’t try to determine the health of a patient through mere observation, you should not attempt to gauge the health of your work environment based on observation and opinion. Often, there are issues you perceive as problems that others do not; similarly, issues may run much deeper than leadership recognizes.
