 Ms. Verra, the Accounts Payable Manager of Institution ABC, provided me with my first internship opportunity (fictitious and fictitious company names). As an intern, I wrote bank instructions, organized cheque payments, and managed vendor bills. Ms. Verra is one of the twelve accounts payable team members. In addition to the reports to be given to the government, banks, and other stakeholders, we get countless invoices and documents for review as a significant organization. Ms. Verra was unconcerned that most of our department’s employees lack a healthy work-life balance. She required her employees to work extra nearly daily, culminating in 11- to 14-hour shifts. Even though she did not compensate us for our overtime work, she fed us as a token of her appreciation. She was quite demanding when it came to producing outputs, and she yelled at us and anyone else working under her supervision at the slightest evidence of error. In addition, she was frequently annoyed when her phone calls were disregarded after a single ring.

Due to her egocentric personality, Ms. Verra was unlikeable. As long as she received praise from higher management, she did not care about the welfare of her employees. Whenever she oversaw a group, she required everyone to remain in the office until their daily chores were completed. Aside from that, I believe she abused her supervisory role. She was more concerned with managing the behavior of her employees than encouraging them (Ravikumar & Parks, 2020). Her desire for perfection is ultimately what repels others from her. Due to her constant pursuit of excellence, she chose to collaborate with seasoned experts. By doing so, she blocked me and the other interns from working under her supervision and acquiring experience.

The effects of this individual’s leadership.

 Did the aspects that made them an unadmirable leader produce any negative consequences, whether for yourself, another individual, or the organization?

Indeed, her actions hurt the team. Some of my coworkers had lost interest in the work they were doing. They were unmotivated, and most of the interns left the banking platform in search of other learning opportunities. Some coworkers became ill because of long hours, while others appeared exhausted. Most of the paperwork responsibilities were delegated to me, and I felt pressed to do them because I feared making a mistake. Furthermore, most of my colleagues preferred to conceal their errors rather than disclose them to Ms. Verra because they were terrified of the extended sermon, which caused them to doubt their ability.

For this Discussion, consider an actual situation from your professional career in which you worked for a leader whose leadership style was inconsistent with what you desired or for a leader you did not admire.

Post your analysis of the influence of personal traits on leadership and followership by including the following:

  • Describe the leader in question and the situation in which you worked with them.
    • Note: Do not identify the individual or the organization where they worked. If necessary, use fictitious names in your description.
  • Identify specific traits that made the leader unadmirable or challenging to follow.
