How Community Health Nurses Recognize Bias Stereotypes And Implicit Bias Within The Community

Bias, stereotypes, and implicit bias are subconscious human attitudes that affect nurse-patient relationships, particularly when caring for diverse populations. A stereotype is associated with preconceived assumptions about a certain group of people (Falkner, 2018). On the other hand, a bias is a negative evaluation of a group of people and its members (Bucknor-Ferron & Zagaja, 2016). For example, providers may recommend effective and advanced treatment to a white patient than a minority population. Implicit bias is the unconscious attitude due to stereotypes or bias towards a group of people (Falkner, 2018). As such, it is important for the community health nurse to understand the indicators of bias, stereotypes, and implicit bias among different, races, age or gender. For instance, community health nurses can spend time in the community to recognize bias, stereotypes, and implicit bias. This can be achieved through performing public/community health assessments, which enables the community health nurse to learn and gain knowledge about the individuals’ cultural, environmental, and social needs.

How should the nurse address these concepts to ensure health promotion activities are culturally competent?

The nurse can address the concept of bias, stereotypes, and implicit bias through personal awareness. Bucknor-Ferron and Zagaja (2016) allege that understanding personal awareness can lead to the development of self-regulatory behavior that prevents the effect of bias on nurse-patient interactions. Additionally, personal awareness allows nurses to recognize acceptable and unacceptable behavior and stay on the right path when experiencing an unconscious attitude. Thus, the perception of others through the lenses of personal awareness offers a basis for therapeutic relationships for culturally competent health promotion activities. Personal awareness also allows for the consideration of diverse patient needs and the development of health promotion activities that are culturally competent.

Strategies to Reduce Cultural Dissonance and Bias

To reduce cultural dissonance and bias while providing culturally competent care, the nurse can use the Campinha Bacote Cultural Framework Model. The model has different steps Including cultural awareness, cultural skill, cultural knowledge, cultural encounter, and cultural desire. For instance, cultural awareness allows the nurse to consciously acknowledge their own cultural backgrounds while avoiding biases toward other cultures. Another strategy is that a nurse must be culturally skilled. Cultural skills allow nurses to gather relevant information from patients using culturally appropriate ways and physical assessment (Botelho & Lima, 2020).

Cultural knowledge can also allow a nurse to be objective towards other cultures as they interact with patients. Through cultural encounters, the nurse should not rely on conventional views but rather avoid stereotypes in nurse-patient interaction (Botelho & Lima, 2020). Similarly, a cultural desire presents nurses with an affinity for cultural education and skills. This is essential in reducing cultural dissonance while providing culturally competent care.
