Personal awareness also allows for the consideration of diverse patient needs and the development of health promotion activities that are culturally competent.

Strategies to Reduce Cultural Dissonance and Bias

To reduce cultural dissonance and bias while providing culturally competent care, the nurse can use the Campinha Bacote Cultural Framework Model. The model has different steps Including cultural awareness, cultural skill, cultural knowledge, cultural encounter, and cultural desire. For instance, cultural awareness allows the nurse to consciously acknowledge their own cultural backgrounds while avoiding biases toward other cultures. Another strategy is that a nurse must be culturally skilled. Cultural skills allow nurses to gather relevant information from patients using culturally appropriate ways and physical assessment (Botelho & Lima, 2020).

Cultural knowledge can also allow a nurse to be objective towards other cultures as they interact with patients. Through cultural encounters, the nurse should not rely on conventional views but rather avoid stereotypes in nurse-patient interaction (Botelho & Lima, 2020). Similarly, a cultural desire presents nurses with an affinity for cultural education and skills. This is essential in reducing cultural dissonance while providing culturally competent care.
