How Bullying Correlates with the Academic Performance of Adolescents

Bullying

For a long time now, bullying has been rampant in schools. However, the awareness of the consequences of bullying on children and adolescents has not been fair. Bullying refers to aggression acts that are repeated within a period of time and entail an imbalance of power between the perpetrator and their targets (Kowalski & Limber, 2013). According to Kowalski & Limber (2013), bullying has also evolved from the traditional form of bullying to a new mode of bullying called cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is the use of digital platforms like text messaging, social networking sites, websites, online games, e-mail, and instant messages to exert power on targets (Kowalski & Limber, 2013).

This proposal aims at finding out how bullying affects the self-esteem of an adolescent, their mental health as well as their subsequent academic performance in school. It will also examine the nature and characteristics of targets’ personalities that the perpetrator looks at before contemplating bullying. Researchers have acknowledged the fact that low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression are the consequences of bullying and also the precursors to bullying (Reijntjes, 2010). Therefore, bullied children are more vulnerable to low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety. Kowalski & Limber (2013) find that in some cases, these symptoms present signals to perpetrators that the child or adolescent is an easy target of bullying. Therefore, this paper will find the connection between the characteristics of the targets of bullying and the personality of adolescents who are prone to be perpetrators of bullying.

Research has also indicated that bullying causes physical health effects such as poor appetite, sleep problems, stomach pain, bedwetting, tension, headaches, sleep problems, and fatigue among bullied children more than non-bullied children. Additionally, this paper will research how these effects may impact the academic performance of bullied children. The study hypothesizes that bullying negatively affects the academic performance of adolescents.
