How and Why Luke May Have Edited Marks Gospel
Mark 14:3-9 contrasted with Luke 7:36-50
Luke 7 36-50 is an edited version of Mark 14:3-9; the two readings talk about a similar incident, but the authors interpret them differently. It is clear that when Luke was writing his books, he used the book of Mark as the main source. The differences in the two parts of the Bible lead to questioning Luke’s intention by editing Mark’s writings. The main difference is that Mark talks about the objection to using expensive perfume on Jesus by the disciples (Bible Gateway 1). However, Luke omits this section; Mark gave the narration of the objection of the expensive perfume to teach about discipleship. Luke, on the other hand, omitted this section because of the following reasons. Luke was teaching about salvation and forgiveness. Thus, the section could not be relevant, and this is why he opted to edit it. The differences in Mark and Luke’s interpretation of the Bethany anointing show that the two perceived discipleship differently.
Mark 3:31-35 contrasted with Luke 8:19-21
Mark 3:31-35 and Luke 8:19-21 are two texts that talk about the same incident. Mark narrates all that happened and what Jesus said. However, Luke omits some phrases. Luke tried to omit all the words that shod Jesus or any of his disciples in a bad way. Luke Omitted Mark 3: 33, a sarcastic remark by Jesus, “Who is my mother and brothers?” Mark contrasts the natural family and the disciple family; from this text, we can see that Jesus revealed the discipleship family. However, Luke does not contrast discipleship and natural family by omitting verse 33. Luke’s text is slightly different from that of Mark since Mark’s text gives a detailed account of the occurrence, while Luke’s text seems to be a summary of the event (Bible Study Tools 1). One of the reasons that can be attributed to this difference is that Mark was more of an eyewitness of the incident since he lived during the time of Jesus. However, Luke’s text is more of a summary because Luke narrated a second or third account of this incident. After all, he lived many years after Jesus.
