Homelessness
Homelessness is a state of someone permanently lacking shelter or adequate housing, hence lacking safety. Homelessness has been a severe problem worldwide. It first became a national issue in the 1870s after the brief decline during the Civil War (“National Center for Biotechnology Information.” n.d). According to experts, the number of homeless people is increasing as shelters across the United States have reported rising numbers of people seeking shelter.
I come from a community with several homeless people, specifically in Pikesville, Maryland. As of 2020, Maryland had an estimated number of 6,360, as reported by Continuums of Care (United States Interagency Council on Homelessness n.d). These numbers include children and adults who search for shelter every day and try to survive with little to no food under harsh weather conditions with worn-out or less clothing.
Several factors cause Homelessness in Maryland, one of them being that housing is really expensive. Maryland, the 7th state with the highest housing wage, makes it hard even for people with decent jobs to afford these expensive houses. Secondly, unemployment is heavily linked to Homelessness, as citizens cannot afford shelter, food, clothing, or health services with no income. Homelessness then leads to complicated illnesses such as heart disease, which can lead to death.
However, the community does its best to reduce the number of homeless people. For instance, several shelters are offered to homeless people and children’s homes. In addition, people form non-governmental organizations that guide people on how to start businesses or what to do in case of unemployment.
Lastly, the End of Homelessness is interesting as it comes up with strategies to reduce Homelessness in the country. For instance, they are helping communities identify areas to improve to reduce Homelessness. In conclusion, Homelessness is a factor that affects the whole world, and it is not fair for human beings to go through it. Therefore, governments and communities should employ measures to solve the problem.
