Healthcare Statistics
Health care statistics are numbers that are presentative of health information. They form an empirical evidence base used to make health care decisions, plans, and conclusions. Statistics are essential in health care. Health care emphasizes research and evidence-based practice. The human population has high expectations of quality and affordable healthcare services. Health surveillance and research data can inform health professionals to understand the efficacy of interventions and identify existing gaps in public health (Mathews & Hoyert, n.d.).
Health statistics reflect the actual health of the population compared to prevailing conditions that have an impact on health. Health professionals can make use of statistics to assess interventions and medications to improve the quality of care. Besides being a reflection of the health of the population, health statistics can also help quantify disparities in health care and health conditions within a population (Irmiya & Kyarshik, 2020). Government health and other health services organizations such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) hospital system and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gauge the overall state and quality of health of populations through health statistics.
Healthcare statistics are gathered using scientific research methods. The data is directly collected from human populations sampled based on the intent of the research and data on humans. Healthcare statistics may be developed by research experts employed by the government or by experts employed by non-governmental organizations. Health statistics can be sourced from population health surveys, medical records, disease surveillance data, disease registries published health reports, health data briefs, and peer-reviewed health literature. Most of these healthcare statistics and health data sources can be obtained from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).
