Healthcare Rationing
Healthcare rationing refers to the deliberate provision of inadequate resources and services that are deemed beneficial to the clients or patients but are expensive. Healthcare rationing can be applied at different levels, including management, healthcare services, health policies, and in healthcare finances. Rationing occurs in almost all healthcare systems in low-income countries (Moosa & Luyckx, 2021). Currently, healthcare rationing is an ongoing process but is faced with various challenges, such as health inequity, which directly impacts rationing. The rationing is only observed in the insurance companies such that certain services are denied to certain people due to high cost. In my opinion, healthcare rationing should not occur, given its negative impacts. Currently, all healthcare workers aim to provide equal affordable and quality healthcare services. Denying an individual a beneficial service due to cost will promote health inequity. Instead, there should be an approach to make the service less expensive and avail it to the entire individual in need of the service. The major areas of concern regarding healthcare rationing are health inequity and injustice in healthcare provision. Health inequity has long been an issue in the healthcare system. When rationing is implemented, vulnerable groups, including people from low socioeconomic backgrounds, are predisposed to health inequity. Besides, rationing will cause some form of injustice to patients as it would mean patients are denied services due to their financial status. According to Moosa & Luyckx (2021), rationing is associated with negative impacts rather than benefits. As a result, rationing in healthcare is not a welcomed strategy.
