The agenda behind this article is to give the overall picture of the nursing workforce in Washington. While painting this picture, the author has revealed a deficit of nurses within Washington. The author has expounded on this by stating that despite an increase in the number of registered nurses (RN) in the state, the numbers still do not fall within the required ratio. The number of RNs in 2016 increased by over two thousand five hundred nurses. Even so, this brought the ratio of RNs to health consumers to 977 RNs for 100,000 Washington citizens. This ratio is still minimal. Further turning to the number of licensed practical nurses (LPNs), the article reveals that the number of nurses within this category has been steadily declining since 2008, when it was at its peak of 13,751 LPNs, to 2018, when the number was at its lowest, creating a ratio of 135 LPNs for 100,000 people (Nursing, 2019). One notable thing that the author has observed in all the cases of every category of nurses is that they are distributed similarly throughout the population in the rural and urban areas. The article also notes that there is an area that is impressive when assessing the nursing workforce in this state. The first thing is that the number of Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNPs) is increasing in the state. In 2006, for instance, there were slightly more than 2800 ARNPs, but the latest data in 2018 showed that the number has increased to almost 6000 ARNPs (Nursing, 2019). The second good news is that the nurses’ education level is increasing as time goes by. It was noted that about 62 percent of nurses surveyed in the Washington State RN Survey were baccalaureate degree holders and above. Also, this group was between 19 and 29 years old, indicating that many younger nurses are joining the nursing field and have much higher qualifications. The only challenge is that despite these progresses, Washington still has to deal with the deficit of nurses.
