Health Topic Approval – Three Potential Health Topics for Educational Session
Being the office manager in a family practice office, I have to give a monthly 30-minute educational session to patients, 30 minutes, about different health topics to provide them with valuable information. The doctor started these sessions a year ago to help patients raise their awareness and be proactive in following their health. Three of the most interesting subjects were chosen to be presented at the next educational session based on the benefits for the patients themselves.
Potential Topic 1: Diabetes Management
Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects a large part of our population. The prevalence is rising every day, and selecting this topic for educational sessions will be beneficial for the patients. Fighting against diabetes will allow patients to learn vital information to help them manage their conditions. There are several reasons behind my choice.
First, diabetes management depends on a comprehensive understanding of the various aspects, including proper nutrition, exercise protocols, medication taking, and regular monitoring of blood glucose levels (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022; Mayo Clinic, 2022). By providing patients with the necessary information and resources, they can more easily navigate the difficulties associated with diabetes and prevent or delay the development of complications. Secondly, diabetes management is a lifelong commitment, and increasing the patients’ knowledge can promote control and confidence. This can, in turn, lead to increased quality of life and better health results.
Potential Topic 2: Heart Health and Cardiovascular Disease Prevention
Cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks and strokes, are some of the leading causes of death worldwide (Rippe, 2019). The topic of heart health and cardiovascular disease prevention for the educational session could be among the most essential choices for all ages and risk categories of patients to be discussed.
One reason I chose this issue is its broad prevalence among people of different ethnic backgrounds and the possibility of affecting lives through early intervention and prevention methods. By teaching patients about these risk factors, e.g., unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, they become more aware that they can maintain a heart-healthy lifestyle.
Furthermore, the session could cover various aspects of cardiovascular disease prevention, including dietary recommendations, an exercise part, stress-managing techniques, and proper medication use if needed. Empowering patients with knowledge about modifiable risk factors can encourage them to make proactive changes toward lowering the risk and do their level best to never get heart-related diseases.
Potential Topic 3: Skin Care and Dermatological Conditions
Often, skin health is ignored, yet it is essential to the overall health of one’s body(Brind’Amour, 2024). Choosing skincare/dermatological conditions as the subject of my presentation might help some patients grasp a few principles of healthy skin and identify some of the problematic conditions that might call for medical practitioners’ attention. Part of the reason is the great variety of skin problems, from acne and eczema to skin cancer; teaching people to keep their skin clean, avoid unnecessary sunlight, and when to seek expert help is another reason.
Similarly, a session could be provided to dispel skin-care myths and address the various misconceptions that patients may have online about the ‘best practices.’ This way, they could be advised on what is wrong and its rationale and would hopefully make more informed decisions about their skin-care regimen.
Conclusion
The three potential topics – diabetes management, heart health and cardiovascular disease prevention, and skin care and dermatological conditions – have profound benefits meaningful to most patients: knowledge, empowerment to take care of themselves, and ultimately enhanced community health.

Question
For the final assessment of the course, you will assume the role of an office manager in a family practice office. Your office offers monthly 30-minute educational sessions for patients on a variety of topics. You have been asked to conduct next month’s presentation.
This Health Topic Approval assessment will allow you to keep your presentation in mind throughout the remainder of the course, as you will use terms from several different assessments in your presentation, and you will be evaluated on accurate medical terminology use and pronunciation.
In most cases, your physician group would likely dictate your presentation topic. For the final assessment in this course, however, you will have the opportunity to choose a topic that interests you. It does not need to be based on one of the body systems highlighted in the course assessments. For example, you may want to focus your presentation on a digestive system disease. Other topics are diabetes management, cardiac rehabilitation, diet management, and skin care. These are examples only; choose the topic of interest to you. Maybe you have a specific condition and would like to learn more about it, given all that you have learned about medical terminology throughout this course. Maybe a family member or friend has the condition.
