Health Disparities, Leadership and Economic Models

Health Disparities, Leadership, and Economic Models

My discussion on the impact of strong leadership skills in nursing care with a strong economic model in patient management with my preceptor earlier this week was a great success. We noted that leadership is an essential skill for all qualified professionals. In nursing practice, these skills can improve the motivational levels of other nurses in the work environment, impacting a positive attitude towards patients’ management and service delivery and increasing their sense of responsibility. Leadership skills in nursing practice involve individual effort to influence other people’s behaviors by direct provision of individualized care, which is the primary goal of healthcare practice. These skills also help in problem-solving.

No progress has been made in addressing health disparities despite the technological advancements in medical treatment. For instance, a low life expectancy (15 years less) will be experienced by a child born in the Glasgow area in the UK compared to a child born in one of the richest parts of the city.   Growing up in deprived areas exposes the child to no safe place to play, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries to the child. This desperately also increases the likelihood of developing breathing problems in children living in damp housing.

Healthcare is a complex dimension, and as nurses, we need to understand how these different healthcare concepts are integrated. This means nurses ought to look at everything in a broader picture, from basic physiological processes to our residential areas. During our discussion, we also noted that there is low community knowledge of the available healthcare resources. This has led to underutilization of resources, thus exposing the community to higher risks of developing non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, among others. It is, therefore, worthwhile to note that addressing the healthcare disparities will directly or indirectly impact the lives of community members positively. During this week’s meeting, we also discussed the capstone project proposal.
