Hardware System Configuration

With the growing social media population, shooting, uploading, and uptake of video content has increased (Tsuchida et al., 2016). This increase in video content uptake creates a business opportunity for professional video production. Having passion and skills towards beauty and fashion, the idea of coming up with a YouTube channel comes in handy since this will be like a business to me, enabling me to attract viewers and, in return, earn good money from the views and subscriptions received. Using the YouTube platform for my vlogs, I will be able to reach a wider audience, and my videos will be more accessible to the masses than if I just posted on my WordPress website. Through this channel, I  will be able to use my vlogs to drive traffic to my website, generate leads, and sell some of my products besides earning from the channel. Since this is to remain professional, I would not want to engage any of my personal computers or devices in the process.

At a minimum, research and select these components to build your YouTube business system:

Being a new business, here are some of the components I will have to buy to build my YouTube business system:

System Unit

The system unit will be a Dell Inspiron 3880 Desktop, Intel Core i7-10700-12GB Memory, 512GD SSD. See Appendix A Figure 1. Since video editing is a very intensive task, a robust processor like the Intel Core i7 is needed. Processing speed is also essential in video editing. This system unit also has a capable power supply that can handle both the CPU and GPU components.

The system’s SSD feature will make editing my 4K videos easier since a lot of storage space is needed for video editing tasks. Though I can work with external storage devices, they are slower compared to internal SSDs.

Top-of-The-Line Video Card

I will be using the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3030 Ti as my graphics card.

Minimum 4K 32″ Monitor.

The monitor will be a  Dell 32 4K USB-C Hub Monitor P322QE. See Appendix A Figure 2.

External Microphone

For more compatibility with my camera, I went for the MIC-01 DV/Camera Stereo Microphone together with the BEHRINGER Audio Interface, 1x XLR/TRS 1x . See Appendix A, Figure 3.

External Camera

I chose the Canon EOS M50. See Appendix A Figure 4.

Lighting

For lighting, I will be using The FotodioX Selfie Starkite Vlog 18″ Bi-Color Ring light. See Appendix A Figure 5.

Operating System

I picked Adobe Premiere Pro.

Storage and backup

To back up my data, I will be using the Toshiba 500GB USB 3.0 External Hard disk Drive. See Appendix A Figure 6.

Explain what was important in making each decision about all the hardware and external devices and why you settled for the system build you chose.

System Unit

Since this business will involve a lot of video editing, the system’s processing power and storage space are to be taken into consideration. These factors led me to the  Dell Inspiron 3880 Desktop, Intel Core i7-10700-12GB Memory, 512GD SSD.

One needs a fast CPU and a fast GPU for video editing tasks. Most software used in video editing is CPU-heavy and hence needs a fast processing speed (“Optimizing your system for Premiere Pro and After Effects,” 2020). The selected processor also has more integrated cores and can split tasks, making it more efficient. In addition, it has a larger processor cache, allowing the system to retrieve the files in the processor’s cache quickly.

This device also has a capable power supply of between 800w-1000w, making it able to handle power consumption from both the CPU and GPU. Lastly, looking at its storage, the system can support the 4K video processing during edits.

Top-of-The-Line Video Card

When choosing a graphic card, performance and ray tracing should be put into consideration (Horowitz, 2021). The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3030 Ti has an excellent 1080 performance, and its ray tracing performance is also very impressive.

Minimum 4K 32″ Monitor

In editing, the Dell 32 4K USB-C Hub Monitor P322QE is highly recommended since it’s inexpensive compared to similar market-capable monitors. It also has core pixels, creating more workspace (3,840 by 2,160 pixels). Additionally, with this 4K monitor, one can get more accurate ideas of the details and sharpness of a very high-resolution photo/video (Hanson, 2021). Lastly, the monitor has a number of connectivity options offering ports and slots for both HDMI and USB, among others.

External Microphone Plus an Audio Preamp

A poor soundtrack can ruin a quality video. Understanding the importance of sound in filmmaking is an important aspect of being a successful filmmaker (Muncatchy, n.d.). The MIC -01 DV/Camera Stereo Microphone was chosen as it has a higher quality in capturing audio. Its conversion of sound waves into audio signals is more accurate and effective.

External Camera

Cost and functionality are the most essential aspects when choosing a camera. A mirrorless DSLR camera would be the best choice for my low-budget video-making venture. A DSLR strikes a balance between cost and functionality for this application (“How to Choose a Camera for Low-Budget Filmmaking,” 2020). The Canon EOS M50 is a light and compact camera with a very good autofocus performance and an easy-to-use interface. It has a touchscreen display with wireless connectivity capabilities; hence, it’s easy to use and portable during work.

Lighting

Light is the essence of video making; lighting makes video shooting and projections possible. For this reason, lighting is one of the fundamental elements that must be considered in filmmaking (Piazzolla & Gribaudo, 2008). Lighting is essential since I would like to have my viewers get deeper and finer details of my makeup tutorials and get the color contrasts of my fashion materials and outfits. The best option is the FotodioX Selfie Starkite Vlog 18″ Bi-Color Ring light. The light comes with a camera holder kit and also enables one to adjust the warmth, making it easy to balance the light.

Storage Device and Backup

Backup and disaster recovery are important aspects of any business as they ensure continuity in an enterprise in the event of a disaster (Napolitano & Freund, 2016). The Toshiba 500GB USB 3.0 External Hard disk Drive is cost-friendly and also readily available. This setup will be very useful in creating a storage space for my videos, and in case of any data loss, I can still have a backup of my previous videos.

Operating System

Having researched by talking with several YouTubers, I would opt for Adobe Premiere Pro as my editing software installed on a Microsoft Windows operating system. The Microsoft Windows operating system is favorable for this application, given its ease of use, availability, backward capability, plug-and-play capabilities, and ability to support new hardware (BRADLEY, 2009). On the other hand, the Adobe Premiere Pro is favorable as it supports up to 8K resolutions. The importation of raw files from camera devices is also effective due to its numerous features. One can edit any format from any camera on any platform using Premiere Pro. In addition, Premiere Pro works well with other apps, such as Adobe Photoshop.

Explain the value of the choices and how much the system will cost.

Since this is the first step in this business, the costs are most likely to be high due to the purchase of new equipment. The equipment will be sourced from one supplier to make it easier during the shipment process. I chose to source the equipment from Amazon since they had great offers on these products in comparison to the prices offered by other suppliers.

Below are the prices of these components:

  • The Dell Inspiron 3880 Desktop, Intel Core i7-10700-12GB Memory, 512GD SSD goes for $ 782.00
  • The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3030 Ti goes for $1853.99.
  • The Dell 32 4K USB-C Hub Monitor P322QE goes for $899.99.
  • MIC -01 DV/Camera Stereo Microphone goes for around $33.99.
  • The Canon EOS M50 goes for $649.00.
  • The FotodioX Selfie Starkite Vlog 18″ Bi-Color Ring light will cost $99.00.
  • The Toshiba 500GB USB 3.0 External Hard disk Drive will cost $45.00.

The listed equipment’s total price will be about $4,361.98.

Describe all the peripheral device connectors to ensure that they all work together (or include adapters, where needed).

Peripheral device connectors will be very useful in joining up the various components in my editing studio. The various components will be connected to this system via a USB port, Serial port, parallel port, specialized network card, Bluetooth, and HDMI. The video card will be connected by plugging into the card deck, the monitor using an HDMI cable, the microphone using an audio jack, the external camera through a USB cable or Bluetooth, and the storage device through the USB port. Some adapters that might be needed include the display port to HDMI adapter and a memory card adapter for the camera’s memory card.
